Official Website of the Camogie Association

The Camogie Association is committed to creating and maintaining the safest possible environment for all young people who wish to participate in our Gaelic Games and activities. We will take all practicable steps to protect them from discernable forms of abuse – from harm, discrimination or degrading treatment and shall respect their rights, wishes and feelings.

We do in partnership with dedicated volunteers at Club, County, Provincial and National levels and with the cooperation and support of an equally dedicated cohort of staff all of whom are committed to the safeguarding of children and young people in our Association. Equally, the role that parents have to play in ensuring we adhere to our good practice guidelines assists us in achieving this aim.

Child Safeguarding Training is highlighted in Children First as being mandatory and is required for the level of child safeguarding engagement one has in the Association.

The Camogie Association have three levels of Child Safeguarding Training now in place in our Association and attendance is dependent on what role a person may have in relation to children. All training is delivered in workshop format and all are of three hours duration each and are endorsed by agreement with Sport Ireland.

Safeguarding 1 – Child Protection in Sport Awareness Workshops relevant to coaches and others who work in a regulated role with children in the Association
Please see Safeguarding Tutors for a list of tutors in your County who deliver this workshop.

Safeguarding 2 – Club Children’s Officer Training for Club Children’s Officer
Please contact your County Children’s Officer for dates for this workshop.

Safeguarding 3 – Designated Liaison Person Training for DLPS in Clubs
Please contact your County Children’s Officer for dates for this workshop.

Online Safeguarding 1 Refresher
The Gaelic Athletic Association recently developed an Online Safeguarding 1 Refresher programme for those who previously attended a face to face Safeguarding 1 workshop. This programme can only be completed if you have attended a face to face Safeguarding 1 workshop within the last three years.

The Online Safeguarding 1 Refresher may also be availed of by those who have attended relevant safeguarding training with other sports NGBs or Local LSPs.

The Online Safeguarding 1 Refresher can be accessed HERE

Temporary Safeguarding 1 Programme

With no on-field activity taking place over the last few months many Clubs and County Boards have concentrated on recruiting new or potential coaches to work with underage teams or in related roles of responsibility.

Additional coaching programmes have been provided for these new or potential coaches and this has naturally led to a surge in applications to attend the Safeguarding 1 (Child Protection in Sport Awareness) Workshop, a requirement for all underage coaches. The current temporary ban on face-to-face training has also put additional pressures on our delivery of virtual safeguarding training with every available online slot utilised on a daily basis.

As a temporary measure, NEW or POTENTIAL coaches of underage teams who have completed or are completing their Foundation/FUNdamentals coaching qualification may avail of a short-term arrangement and fulfil their initial safeguarding training requirements by completing the Safeguarding 1 Online Refresher Programme.  For NEW or POTENTIAL coaches of underage teams this training will be knowns as the Temporary Safeguarding 1 Programme.

This safeguarding training recognition will suffice for them to commence in a coaching or related role of responsibility and remains in place until such time as the new coach has attended their virtual or face-to-face safeguarding workshop or will expire on 31 December 2021
