Glen Rovers 4-6 Courcey Rovers 4-5

Glen Rovers captured the Under 16 “”A”” county league title as they battled it out to the finish with Courcey Rovers in an exciting contest in Castle Road yesterday. The superb surface of the county board pitch lent itself to a great contest and both teams must be compliments for the quality of fare served up.

In a game that ebbed and flowed and produced a total of eight goals there were many stars but Glen Rovers had the ace in the pack in Sinead O’ Halloran who struck 3-5 of her sides total as they annexed their first “”A”” league title at this level.

Courcey’s got the perfect start as Jennifer Ryan fired the ball to the net inside four minutes, Jacinta Crowley pointed a close in free and Courcey’s were four to the good inside five minutes. The Glen settled with Sinead O’ Halloran showing her accuracy pointing two frees and a forty five and they were back in the contest, Julie Mulcahy put two points between the sides but the Glen responded with corner forward Lauren Callanan finding the net to edge her side in front.

Putting the Glen defence under pressure Jennifer Ryan resorted Courcey’s advantage finishing the ball over the line but from the puck out the lead changed hand again as Sinead O’ Halloran continuing to cause the Courcey defence huge problems struck for her sides second goal.  Now winning a lot of possession around the centre of the field the Glen hit four points without reply Sinead O’ Halloran on target with three and Lauren Callanan striking one as they opened up a four point lead with four minutes to the break. Courcey’s dug deep and struck back Aisling Moloney now operating at full forward striking two goals in a three minutes spell to give her side a 4-2 to 2-6 interval advantage.

Aided by the wind in the second half the Glen battled for the opening score but the Courcey’s defence stood firm with excellent defending, it was thirteen minutes into the half before the first score Julia Mulcahy pointing to stretch Courcey advantage to three points. The Glen girls worked away and never allowed their heads drop and as they continued to put the Courcey defence under pressure Sinead O’ Halloran struck a vital goal to level matters. With the game up for grabs both defences had to be at their best and with play swinging from end to end the battled for scores continued again Sinead O’ Halloran showed her class as she hit a goal to give the Glen a three point advantage but from the puck out their defence were again under pressure as Courcey’s battled to get back into the game. With the game into injury time Jacinta Crowley pointed two Courcey Rovers frees, but try as they might they failed to breach a Glen defence that held out under severe pressure to take the title, with Leeann O’ Sullivan named as player of the match by Tracy Sheehan chairperson juvenile county board.
