Junior Final

Na Fianna 3-4 Boardsmill 0-2

Na Fianna made up for the Junior Championship loss last year, by over coming Boardsmill this year.  The Boardsmill team under the management of Lil Dwyer, Meath Hurling Manger T.J Reily, & Johnny Masterson will be disappointed with the score line at which they were defeated.

Na Fianna gave a solid performance as they went about achieving their goal from the word go.  With player of the match (for a second year) Claire Coffey on form, Claire created a number of attacks and made most of the play from her centre field position.  Claire was also helped by Lorraine Boggan & Mandy Dixon in the back line, Aine Kirby, Niamh Kirby & Shauna Ennis worked  hard in the forward line.

The junior final was the first of the County Finals being played in Donaghmore/Ashbourne in front of a nice crowd of supporters from each side.

Boardsmil were first on the score board with a point from Linda Ryall, Na Fianna forced all the play with their first point coming from Niamh Kirby from a free. After this they had a succession of attempts on the Boardsmill defence line these coming from Niamh Kirby, Mary Reilly & Elizabeth Flynn all of which went wide.

Na Fianna had a total of ten wides before Shauna Ennis found the net in the 27th minute. Boardsmills Patrisha Cully in goal helped keep the Na Fianna forwards at bay as she pulled off some fine saves. Niamh Kirby pointed from play before the half time whistle to leave the score at Na Fianna 1-2 Boardsmill 0-1.

The second half was much the same as Na Fianna completely pulled away from Boardsmill with a goal in the first three minutes from Niamh Kirby and midway into the second half Marie Healy got Na Finna’s third goal. Boardsmills did try hard with Ann Marie McLoughlin doing well & Enda Kennedy was also a danger when it possession, but it was to be their day as Na Fianna put over two points from Shauna Ennis & Naimh Kirby.

Intermediate Final:

Kiltale 3-12 V Donaghmore/Ashbourne 1-4

Kiltale like the Junior Championship winners had a point to prove this year, having fielded in the last three Intermediate Championship Finals to be defeated by Blackhall Gaels in 2007 & Navan O’Mahonys in 2008, were under pressure to come home with the Intermediate Cup.

They did not let their supporters down this year as they gave a fine performance and gave their management team of T.J Kane, Tommy Cummins, Alan Rogers & David Reilly something to cheer about.

Sheila Courtney Kiltale at centre field was a force to be reckoned with as was player of the match and captain Debra Wigglesworth when she helped in no uncertain terms bring the Intermediate Cup to Kiltale for the first time.

Louise Byrne put over the first two points, playing at full forward Louise was at the end of some fine passes from Debra Wigglesworth. County player Jenny Rispin also proved her worth with a well taken point. Donaghmore/Ashbourne with the home support were looking to Elizabeth Lynch as she tried tireless to gave her team some advantage.

Wigglesworth gained possession on the left side delivery across field to which Louise Byrne finished to the Donaghmore/Ashbourne net, this was followed by all the pressure coming from Kiltale.  Donaghmore/Ashbourne Lorna Dervan & Emma Tormey did defend well and helped clear the ball out from their back line a number of times.

Kiltale grabbed two more points one a piece from Debra Wigglesworth & Louise Byrne before Elizabeth Lynch got their opening score a goal coming from a close in free.  Before the interval Debra Wigglesworth & Donna McGann put two more points on the score board.

On the restart it was Donaghmore/Ashbourne who started the stronger, with they Kiltale back line giving away some frees.  Elizabeth Lynch converted 3 points from placed balls and Alison Fitzgerald Donaghmore/Ashbourne will be kicking herself as she had only the goalie to beat as she hit the ball at goal only to see it rising and go over for a point.

Kiltale who took a little longer to settle in the second half combined well and got they scores that helped them win their first Intermediate Championship (Debra Wigglesworth got a further 1-4, Donna McGann 1-1 & Louise Byrne 0-1). Donaghmore had some wides before the full time whistle but it was Kiltale’s turn to lift that long awaited Intermediate Championship Cup.

Senior Final

Kilmessan 1-8 Trim 1-3

The Fag & O’Regan cup goes back to Kilmessan after a comprehensive win over Trim in the Senior final. Trim who topped the table of the championship were favourites going into this game, but they failed to show their true form,  it was Kilmessan who looked more at ease with their play. Scores were hard to come by as their was only five points scored from both sides in the opening half with four of these coming from frees.

Trim who won their last Senior Title in 2000, were always going to be up against it as Kilmessan lost out to Blackhall Gaels in last years decider and by accounts they were not going to leave Donaghmore/Ashbounrne with to successive defeats.

Both teams started well with each looking to gain the advantage, but their seemed to be something missing in this senior encounter the game lacked the competitive edge that both teams have shown in previous games.

Kilmessan’s centre field pairing of Frances Lynch & Aileen Donnelly worked very well, they held the Kilmessan ship a float.  Both defenses were put under pressure at different stages during the game.  Trim’s Niamh Guy combined well with her sister Edel, while Dearbhla O’Carroll roamed the field to try and help out where she could. Kilmessan’s Caoimhe O’Leary was solid at full back.  The first half was a ding dong half with Edel Guy scoring 2 points from placed balls and Kilmessan’s Aileen Donnelly added three points for her side from frees.

They second half was little more open with scores coming from play, Trim did miss some scoring opportunities on the restart. Aileen Donnelly pointed from a free before her teams full forward Katie Ni Choileann gained possession, she side stepped her opponent and headed straight for goal and she did not falter when she secured the first goal of the game in the 8th minute.

Kilmessan did not look back as their player of the match Frances Lynch came into her own when she made a number of moves up field securing two well taken points on the way, Frances also took some clever line cuts with quick passes to Aileen Donnelly that were delivery up field.

Trim failed to show some of their real form and were it not for the quick thinking of their captain Edel Guy who took a cracker of a shot from a 30m free that went to the back of the Kilmessan net, her team may have lost by a larger margin.

After the match Meath Camogie Chairperson Valerie Curtis presented the Fag & O’Regan cup to the Kilmessan Captain Karen Ward
