The Meath Team who play in Nowlan Park on Saturday afternoon against Offaly in the Gala All Ireland junior championship semi-final are entering a new stage of Meath Camogie History. This will be the first time in the History of Meath Camogie that a Meath Camogie side has reached this level.
Manager John Davis who hails from Westmeath club, Brownstown, is a former Meath Hurling Manager. He achieved success with a Historic All Ireland SHC B Title in 1993 and guided his hurling side to a NHL Div 2 title in 2000 and a place in Division 1 hurling with his first outing against Clare in Ennis. A year in Div 1 hurling which Meath survived was followed by Johns’ departure as Micheal Duignan took over in 2002.
John came on board to manage the Meath Camogie team in 2007. The Team has gone from strength to strength since John took over bringing the team in 2007 to a National League, Leinster Final & All Ireland Final only to be defeated in all three. But he did not let this stop him in 2008 when he managed the Meath team to win the National League Div 4 Final & the All Ireland Nancy Murray Cup.
This year the team entered in a higher National League Division – done well but failed to make the knockout stages. And following on from a great win over Antrim & a draw with Laois Meath they now face Offaly in the All Ireland Semi-Final.
The players are from a number of clubs within the County. Stephanie Horan, Sinead Hackett & Keogh sisters of Aine & Marie, families have tasted All Ireland success with brothers on the Meath Team that won the Nicky Rackard cup in
Meath have some players unavailable to play due to dual commitments of ladies football & also one player Jenny Rispin is also involved with the Management team of the Meath Under 16 Ladies football team who play in the All Ireland u16 Final on Saturday at 2.30pm in Longford against Donegal. Jenny has a tough choice to make on Saturday !!.
