Quite apart from this being a local derby, there is a lot at stake here as teams wanting to progress and compete for the All-Ireland senior championship have to be operating in the top tier.
Waterford certainly have those ambitions, given that they reached an All-Ireland semi-final last year and pushed Cork all the way before running out of gas.
Still, they were taken down by Wexford in the League 12 months ago. The Yellowbellies went on to claim what was then the Division 2 title but the change of format with only six teams in the new top tier left them having to do it all over again.
The Déise did come out on top when the sides met in the championship subsequently and this year, under new manager Seán Power, won by 12 points in the group stages. They have generally been scoring and defending well in recording a 100 per cent record. Power has started 32 players but Beth Carton, Lorraine Bray and Niamh Rockett remain the beating heart of the team.
Oulart-The Ballagh’s All-Ireland club-winning boss, Colin Sunderland has taken over the reins and he has a good mix of youth and experience. The likes of Anais Curran, Sarah and Ciara O’Connor and Ciara Storey are top-class operators while Chloe Foxe is back in the fold after a few years on the sidelines.
Wexford will go into this as underdogs however, with Waterford having tremendous depth, more experience at a higher level and Brianna O’Regan and Abby Flynn other elite performers they call on along with the returning Annie Fitzgerald.

The format provided us with two groups of four, the top two in each moving to Division 3A semi-finals and the other quartet playing in Division 4 semi-finals. What we have here is the two group winners progressing to the Division 3A final. Armagh have been consistently contesting for honours in recent years between League and championship, while Carlow are back after a few years in the doldrums.

Mayo v Tyrone, Joe Fox Memorial Park Tang GAA, 2pm

Mayo and Tyrone were in the same group as Armagh, with the Red Hands getting the better of things by four points when the clashed in Tooreen early in March. Mayo won the old Division 4 last year, beating Wicklow, who were also their victims in the semi-final this time around. Tyrone accounted for Louth.
