UCC mightn’t be the favourites in this season’s Ashbourne Cup, but they
desperately want to be in the decider. Nothing less than a quarter-final
win will suffice according to joint manager Aoife Murray, as the Cork
college prepares to host the finals weekend on February 21/22.
An Ashbourne medal is a treasured possession, and when the last eight
collide next week, no doubt about it, it will be a battle royal to make it
to the final four.
“”It is all about qualifying,”” commented Murray – the current county
custodian, and brother of All Ireland hurling medallist Kevin.
Aoife returned to work in her native city after a spell in Dublin where
she was among the backroom team in UCD helping them complete back-to-backAshbourne titles.

“”I’m with UCC now,”” she warns. “”I have my memories of UCD, but I will have
to leave it at that. They are a fantastic bunch of girls in UCD, and have
most of the team from last year, so they will be strong contenders.””
However, she hastens to stress her faith in the UCC squad, adding, they
have a ‘sprinkling of well-known talent.’
“”Cork captain Cathriona Foley and Orla Cotter will be there, as will
Tipperary’s Jill Horan. We have a tough quarter-final against UUJ, which
will be played at a neutral venue. They have home advantage but it will be
played at a midway venue.
“”What I most admire about our girls is their honesty of effort. UUJ are a
forceful unit. They have Jane Adams and Fionnnuala Carr (daughter of
Ross). We all know how well Jane has played for Antrim and how she has led
O’Donovan Rossa to All Ireland club honours. So, we will have to be at our
best.
“”Ashbourne is a special competition. Not alone for the competitiveness,
but you could have club mates playing against each other, county players
like wise.
“”For now though, all that is on our mind, is qualifying for the semi-final.
The Ashbourne Cup (3rd level camogie) quarter finals will be played
on/before February 7th.
(First named teams at home).
NUIG v UCD (holders); CIT v Garda; UUJ v UCC; UL v WIT.

The finals weekend is on in UCC over February 21st and 22nd.
