WHILE Brendan Cummins will be heading to O’Moore Park Portlaoise this weekend for the M Donnelly GAA Interprovincial hurling championship final, he has a far more attractive engagement on Saturday week (November 8) when the All Ireland winning goalkeeper will be Guest of Honour at the Camogie Association’s prestigious All Star Awards in the City West Hotel, Dublin.

Widely regarded as one of the greatest net minders of his generation, the Tipperary man is the holder of an All Ireland senior medal, and has been honoured as an All Star himself on no less than four occasions. He is also the Poc Fada individual winner for the past three years, and doubles winner.

Speaking this week, Cummins expressed his delight to be associated with such an event, while also stating his belief that æthe skill level in camogie is an awful lot higher than hurling.’

“”There is less walloping off the ball in camogie. It is hurling at its purist. It is all pulling and dragging in senior intercounty hurling but you don’t see that in camogie. I have watched the All Ireland camogie finals down the years, and the skill level is phenomenal.

“”Every year the finals are very good and very close. Wexford stand out from last year, proving what can be achieved if you are determined enough. The old guard (Cork) returned this year.

“”Tipperary’s journey which started in 1999 was massive. We (Tipperary hurlers) used to train in the running track in Dr Crokes and the county camogie team trained there too. We saw how seriously they took it, and were amazed at the toughness of their training. They showed what a bunch of fellows or girls can do if they really want to succeed.

“”The profile of camogie is much higher now. And that is only right because of the amount of effort they put in. It is attracting big audiences. RTE would not be giving it lip service if they didn’t have the viewership.””
