Kilmaley 1-13 v 3-00 Wolfe Tones
Kilmaley had all the work done in the first half to claim their place in the county final on next
Saturday. Strong displays in this first period ensured a safe passage as the second half would
prove to be a lack luster display with Wolfe Tones having a mountain to climb and the
Kilmaley backs holding their own. Indeed the Shannon side had failed to score in that first
period and this was the mountain which they found insurmountable in the second half.
Young player Katie Cahill, who having won a football title with The Banner last week, opened
the scoring and set Kilmaley on their way. Denise Lynch with a long range free from over 60
yards added to the score in the 4th minute. Kilmaley kept up the pressure and had points from
Sh¾nagh Enright after a cutting solo through the centre to slot over the bar. Claire McMahon
had four first half points, two from frees. Helen McMahon also pointed while Sh¾nagh Ehright
had two more and Emma O’Driscoll goaled just before the break to really kill the fight from
the Tones. Indeed the Shannon outfit should have been much further behind but for the heroics
in goal of Aine Nic Cormaick who had to hold out Kilmaley attacks on more than one occasion
in this first half. The first of these saves came in the 14th minute when the Shannon goalie
pulled off a double save. Claire McMahon was denied by the in form keeper in the 22nd minute
while a top class dive at full length to the top corner denied what looked to be a certain goal in
the 28th minute just before O’Driscoll did finally manage to breach the Wolfe Tones line.
The lead was too much for Wolfe Tones to pull back though but they fought on and early
second half goals from Donna Gallery and an Elaine Gallery free pulled back the deficit some
what. Kilmaley only manged two points in this second period which will be far from enough
in the final, these from Claire McMahon and Sh¾nagh Enright. Their back line held firm
though and Wolfe Tones were kept at bay again until Elaine Gallery again from a free found
the back of the net. Kilmaley will now wait on the injury picked up on Sarah Reidy who had to
make way just before full time with a hand injury picked up in an off the ball incident.
While Kilmaley had a comfortable enough win they will certainly need to keep this
performance up for a full 60 minutes if they are to trouble Newmarket in the final.
