In 1986 Croydon Camogie Club was established with Carmelita Winston and Mary Noonan as chairperson and secretary respectively. The team played their first match in March 1987. The majority of the members of Croydon Camogie club in South London moved to London to either attend university or take up employment. This club is the largest club in South London and has both Senior and Junior teams. Croydon Camogie Club is the oldest surviving club in London and has enjoyed varying degrees of success since it’s formation at Senior, Intermediate and Junior level.
The most notable and memorable achievements for the club include the Intermediate championship, the Intermediate league and the Winter league in 1994 followed by a very successful trip to the International 7-aside competition in New York in 1995. Croydon were also Junior Championship winners in 1996, 2001, 2003, 2004 and 2007 and Junior League winners in 2001, 2005 and 2006. Croydon collected the senior championship in 2003 and 2005 as well as the Senior league in 2004 and 2007.
Aside from success on the field of play, Croydon Camogie have been extremely active off the field orgaising many trips, including a memorable visit to Dubai in 2008 and also the challenge of playing a continuous camogie match for 24 hours in August 2008. A huge amount of organisation went into preparing for this challenge and the personnel involved, stretched beyond the players on the pitch and beyond the club itself. Many London camogie clubs, hurling and football clubs as well as relatives, friends and acquaintances of the club members, volunteered their services for the weekend, thus enabling the organisers to draft up a comprehensive timetable detailing the times people were required to carry out various roles.
This event brought the Irish community, GAA, Hurling and Camogie clubs in London together for an entire weekend. Everyone who participated in the event or witnessed all or part of the challenge felt something major was achieved when the final whistle was blown to signify completion of the World Record attempt and the achievement of a Guinness World Record, 24hours and 7minutes after it began. Croydon Camogie Club are travelling to Dublin this weekend to take part in the Camogie Gathering "Lets Play Ball & Have a Ball".
