The Camogie Association is the National Governing Body for the sport of Camogie, and it is responsible for promoting and developing the game, and its governance structures across the Camogie community. The Association is an independent voluntary organisation founded in 1904. The Association is part-funded by Sport Ireland.
The Camogie Association is seeking a Technical Development and Participation Manager on a full-time permanent basis to join the Association’s Senior Leadership team.
The successful candidate will be responsible for leading the technical, participation, retention and games related strategies of the Association, driving growth, engagement, retention and improving standards across the technical and games aspects of the Association’s work.
The Technical Development and Participation Manager will report to the CEO/ Ard Stiúrthóir, and will lead a large and diverse staff team in the Development function of the Association, with responsibility for developing and implementing strategy in the following areas:
Principal duties and responsibilities
Technical development
- Lead and design the ongoing development and review of technical development, growth and participation strategies of the Camogie Association
- Build and support the capacity of the Association’s Units and of volunteers at all levels to support the roll out of national technical and participation strategies
- Ensure, oversee and support the recruitment, training and education of coaches, referees and umpires
- Support Units to observe their obligations to use accredited coaches and referees
Participation & retention
- Ensure the delivery of innovative strategies, programmes and special projects to drive growth, participation and player retention across the range of ages and playing levels within the sport
- Collaborating and supporting Camogie Association partners and sponsors in the activation of participation and growth programmes and initiatives
Research
- Ensure, oversee and support the growth, development and roll out of the Camogie Association research strategy
- Stay informed of and advise the Association of technical development and participation research and development in sport including innovations and developments relevant to the female athlete
- Strengthen the Association’s capacity and knowledge of technical analysis of Camogie and advise on and initiate work to promote greater use of this at all levels
Games development
- Build and support capacity within the Association’s Units and amongst volunteers to provide age-appropriate and meaningful games’ programmes for players on an annual/seasonal basis
- Monitor trends of similar sporting bodies and plan for future developments
- Conduct research and produce briefings, reports and analysis on a variety of relevant areas and topics, sports analysis, market intelligence, industry developments, sector and practice development as well as trends, using internal and external resources
People management
- Lead and manage a diverse team of sports professionals in the areas of technical development, participation and retention. Direct reports include – the national Co-ordinators of coach education and development, referee education and development, participation and retention, youth development, club and education support, player welfare and inclusion and the provincial participation and growth coordinators
- Support and manage reporting staff in their roles in planning, budgeting and delivery of their workplans.
- Contribute to senior management planning and decision-making
Strategic planning and implementation
- Develop and deliver annual participation and development work plans in line with National Development Plan objectives and the communication strategy
- Oversight and monitoring of National Development reporting framework, including monthly, quarterly and annual reports
Finance and budgeting
- Participate as a key manager in the overall financial planning and budgeting of the Association including the priorities of technical development and participation
- Identify potential funding opportunities and completion of funding applications
- Lead budgeting and financial planning among team, ensuring compliance with financial procedures
- Ensure, oversee and support the development, roll out and review of the Camogie Association Player Charter
Partnership working
- Development and nurturing of strong relationships with commercial partners, sponsors, agencies and stakeholders (existing & future)
- Liaise with and support Gaelic games working groups and committees
- Participate as a member of the Implementation Scheme Group – Intercounty Funding
- Develop and promote good interpersonal relationships internally and with other sporting organisations in the promotion of the game of Camogie
- Develop and implements Collaborative projects ensure that Camogie Association objectives are communicated and incorporated
Supporting and building capacity of volunteers
- Liaise with and advise Ard Chomhairle and its Sub Committees on technical development and participation strategies
- Support and develop the work of Various Committees and volunteers
General
- Represent Camogie at internal and external /events to raise the Association’s profile
- Liaise with all external contractors where required on various initiatives, events and resource publications
- Undertake any other duties as required, commensurate with the role, and as directed by the Ard Stiúrthóir
Required Criteria
- A third level degree relevant to sports science, education or other relevant area
- Demonstrable experience of leading, motivating and guiding staff, through continuous development, towards strategic outcomes and objectives
- Advanced knowledge of and experience of the fundamental requirements associated with the technical development of sport from grassroots to elite/intercounty levels
- Detailed knowledge of player, coach and referee development pathways in sport
- Ability to define and develop a technical strategy
- Demonstratable experience of preparing budgets and reporting financial and operational performance against targets
Required Criteria

The ideal candidate will have:
- Experience in collaborative working and developing new relationships to achieve strategic business objectives

- Have an interest in the sport and a knowledge of the structures and operations of a sporting organisation and Gaelic games
- A proven ability to work on collaborative projects to deliver results and influencing others to implement change
- Must have the ability to develop good working relationships at multiple levels, contribute to a positive working environment and influence the delivery of objectives with a wide variety of stakeholders including volunteers, colleagues in sport, sponsors etc
- An understanding of the unique environment of volunteer sporting National Governing Bodies, and experience of working with Volunteers
Desirable Criteria
The following will be advantageous to applicants:
- Knowledge of Camogie/hurling coach education processes and materials
- Knowledge of Camogie/hurling referee education processes
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office and other IT related packages
- Knowledge and/or experience of adult learning methodologies
- Experience of developing tutor and/or coach and/or referee education materials
- Previous playing experience of Camogie/hurling
