Camogie heads to the hills this weekend with seven of the country’s top camogie players competing in the Martin Donnelly Poc Fada na hEireann competition in Co.Louth this Saturday.
Waterford Camogie star Patricia Jackman and Roscommon hurler Gerry Fallon will be out to defend their respective titles. Both face a stiff challenge from highly competitive fields with Tipperary duo; hurler Eoin Kelly and camogie player Jacqui O’Connor amongst the contenders.
Jackman captured the title after a stunning performance last year at the Annaverna Mountain Ravensdale course and the Waterford attacker, whose county is competing in this year’s Gala Premier Junior camogie championship, will need to be at her best in the Cooley peninsula.
Down’s Fionnuala Carr, daughter of football legend, Ross competes for the second year running and is joined by Armagh champion Bernie Murray; Louth’s Voureen Quigley and Caitriona Cantwell while Stephanie Gannon flies the flag for Connacht.
Speaking about this year’s Poc Fada Louth star Voureen Quigley: “”It’s a fantastic event and one that is extremely unique on the GAA & Camogie calendars. There is a fantastic atmosphere and a great sense of camaraderie as you go around the course. I have been competing in this for a number of years and the camogie contenders this year will be well worth watching. The course is tough and the mountain of course is energy sapping; overall it makes for a great event and one that I am looking forward to a lot.””
