Cavan and Monaghan development squads took part in a development day on Saturday 3rd October. Both counties had received æCoillte’ U14 Development squad programmes in the past couple of years and have continued the work done with these squads by moving their development programme up to the U15, U16 and U17 age groups.

Both counties have realised the importance of having young players who are encouraged to develop and improve their skills, rather than æwin at all costs’. The ethos underpinning their Development Squads initiative is one of fun and skills learning. This is combined with a focus on coaches, where the coaches are exposed to new coaching techniques and games, which in turn will lead to the availability of quality coaching across the Counties.

With a higher availability of quality coaching this will hopefully lead to the ongoing improvement in playing standards across the counties of Monaghan and Cavan.
The layout of the day included a training session for both squads in the morning given by Ger Gribben (North Leinster/South Ulster RDO) the aim of which was to improve the players’ capabilities in score taking. This was followed by a series of mini games with the squads being mixed into equal teams of 9. The day then finished with a match between the two county squads where the teams were encouraged to practise the skills they had learned earlier in the day.
A special word of thanks to the Ballyhaise GAA club for the use of their facilities on the day and to Anne Donnellan (Cavan) and Geraldine Clarke (Monaghan) for their help in organising the day.
Below are pictures of the players taking part in the one of the drills of the day.
