Maureen Haughey
The members of St. Mochua’s Camogie Club were deeply saddened at the death of their founder member Mrs. Maureen Haughey in March 2009. To honour her memory and her devotion the sport of Camogie we are pleased to host as an annual event The Maureen Haughey Memorial Tournament.
In the course of her Camogie career Maureen had the distinction of playing for three different clubs in the Derrynoose Parish. Firstly
In 1984 Maureen moved to Derrynoose with her husband Frank. Maureen missed Camogie and after meeting with teachers and other interested people in the area formed a Camogie Team in Derrynoose. That was 25 years ago this year.
Her love for Gaelic tradition was evident in the amount of time she gave to the development of Camogie in the area. Maureen served as a Player, Referee, Chairperson and Treasurer. After a few years the St. Mochua’s Club was able to field a strong Camogie team and were subsequently placed in the first division section in the county.
The club progressed from year to year under Maureen’s direction and today there is a strong senior team and three under-age teams partaking in the county competitions. St. Mochua’s Camogie Club will always remember Maureen’s warm and kind personality. Her devotion to our club will never be forgotten.
