Donaghmore/Ashbourne 4-10 v Kilmessan 0-1
This was a game mainly dominated by Donaghmore Ashbourne. The first score came from Lizzy Lynch but was quickly answered by Kilmessan when their full forward scored a point from a free. From then on Donaghmore Ashbourne took control and gave great team performance.
Lizzy Lynch showed her county class scoring seemingly effortless points and making little of the Kilmessan defence. The first of the game’s goals came from Bronagh Gaughan after a clearance from the Kilmessan goalkeeper came right to her and she did not hesitate in striking the ball on the ground into the back of the net.
Claire Corcoran was superb alongside Bronagh and Lizzy in the half forwards and set up many of the score on the day. An example of this was the ball she sent in from the wings before half time to Bronagh who was perfectly positioned to double on the ball and place it the back of the net.
Half Time: Don/Ash 2-3 Kilmessan 0-1
To look at the final score it would seem that the Donaghmore Ashbourne defence and goal keeper had little to do but in fact it was their strength and skill that resulted in no scores being conceded from play. Sorcha Ferry showed her versatility when she started in the half back line as opposed to her usually forward position.
As the team’s youngest player some might have thought that managers John, Morgan and Maura were taking too big a risk at such a vital game of the championship but Sorcha was solid and consistent in her new position and cleared everything that came her way.
Alison Fitzgerald got her name onto the scorer’s sheet when she picked up the ball at the corner of the goal and struck it into the back of the net. The team work continued with more scores from Lizzy and a point from Aoife O Neill. The dept of the Don/Ash’s talent showed when all four subs came on.
