Camogie and Coillte grow the game across the country
Young Camogie players from eight counties joined Joan O’Flynn, President of the Camogie Association, and Gerry Egan, Coillte to launch this year’s Coillte U-14 Development Squads in
This year the Coillte sponsored squads will come from Armagh,
The programme is supported by the Irish Sports Council and the counties will participate in coaching sessions and blitz competitions between now and August, focusing on the skills of Camogie. Coillte, the forestry and forest products company began their involvement with the initiative in 2004.
Speaking at the launch of this year’s programme Joan O’Flynn, President of the Camogie Association, said: “”The partnership between the Camogie Association and Coillte is a significant contribution to growing out sport. Encouraging young players to continuously improve their Camogie skills will ensure that they enjoy our national game and continue playing it into adulthood. The partnership also supports the development of Camogie coaches in eight counties in 2009.
“”It’s really important that young players are encouraged to develop and improve their skills rather than æwin at all costs’. The ethos underpinning the Coillte Development Squads initiative is one of fun and skills learning. This, combined with a focus on players and coaches, expands the availability of quality coaching that leads to the ongoing improvement in playing standards across the country.
“”In this challenging economic context, the support of Coillte is highly valued and appreciated by all in Camogie and we are delighted with their ongoing association for our sport.””
Gerry Egan, Group Director Corporate Affairs Coillte, expressed his delight to be involved for another year:
“”‘Coillte is delighted to once again sponsor the U-14 Camogie County Development Squads in 2009. As an organisation with deep roots in the Communities in which it operates, Coillte recognises the huge contribution that sport plays in community life. We are delighted to help these players to fulfil their potential by representing their Club and Communities with pride at County level.“”
