It is with sadness that I announe the death of Nell McCarthy former President of Cumann Cam¾gaiochta na nGael who died this morning in a Dublin nursing home, where her sister Peggy also lives.
She was a native of Carrigtwohill in Cork she came to Dublin to join the Department of Education and worked in the National College of Art. She came from a strong Gaelic family, her uncle Jimmy Kennedy captained Cork to All Ireland honours in 1919. She was grand-aunt of Cork hurler Niall McCarthy.
Nell joined and played with the Celtic Club in Dublin and later coached them to win the first club championship in 1964. She was way ahead of her times as a coach, focusing on skill, teamwork and fitness. She trained and coached Dublin senior teams for many years and guided them to All Ireland success many many times in the 50’S & 60’s.
Nell served as Chair of Dublin County Board for 18 years from 1952 to 1970 and was elected President of Cumann Camogaiochta in 1971.
Nell had many interests outside of Gaelic games including travel and art. All of us who knew her respected her. She was a wonderful story teller and knew many people from the world of art.
I joined Celtic while Nell was still training the senior team. She was a marvellous coach and had the ability to get the best out of players. Her word was law and she could put you in your place with a few well chosen words! She had a vibrant personality and kept up to date about camogie and her beloved Cork, but Dublin was a huge part of her life and she was quietly proud of all the players whom she trained.
Nell made a huge contribution to camogie and we will remember her as a woman who enjoyed life to the full. She will have a front row seat in Heaven. Sleep peacefully dear Nell.
