Cork coach Fiona O’Driscoll had been hotly tipped to take over from former boss Cronin, who stepped down after losing this year’s All Ireland final to Wexford, but has recently distanced herself from the post.

“”There had been some talk around the county of me taking on the role but I can say now that I definitely won’t be in charge for next year’s campaign,”” O’Driscoll said when asked about the job.

“”There’s a county board meeting scheduled for sometime next week and there should be a decision made around then. I’m not really concerned about who gets the job because I know there are plenty of talented people out there who can take the county forward,”” O’Driscoll also commented.

Cronin has been one of Cork’s most successful managers in recent times since his appointment to the senior team in 2005. He led the Rebels to All-Ireland titles in 2005 and 2006 but narrowly missed out on a three-in-a-row this year when the talented Wexford side proved too much for them in September.

Before his tenure in charge of the senior side, Cronin had been working within Cork Camogie for almost ten years. The farmer from Cloughduv won five All-Ireland Minor titles from 1998 to 2003 before his step up to the senior side but sees now as the right time to leave. “”I’ve been around for almost ten years and I think it’s best for things to be freshened up a bit. Nobody wants to hear the same voice at training and matches every week, that’d leave things very stale.””

“”We all feel now is the perfection time for an injection of something new and it leaves things very exciting for the future of Cork Camogie. I’m very proud of what I’ve achieved and I’m proud of the girls I’ve worked with,”” Cronin said.

The Cork County Board are scheduled to meet before Christmas to discuss the vacant manager’s position. A new face is likely to be in place before the beginning of the National League campaign, which begins in February.
