KILKENNY maintained their unbeaten record in the All-Ireland Minor æA’ Camogie championship following their convincing final win over Cork at Clonmel yesterday.
Cats duo Marie Dargan and Michelle Quilty caused most of the damage upfront but this was a very impressive Kilkenny outfit who were dominant throughout.
A strong defensive performance from Leanne Fennelly on the half-back line, earned the daughter of former All-Ireland winner Kevin; the player of the match award.
Early scores from Dargan (2) and Kate McDonald ensured Kilkenny led by 0-3 to 0-0 after eight minutes.
The reigning champions continued to pile on the pressure in the opening quarter and a Marie Dargan goal in the ninth minute after a long ball in from Catherine Walsh, showed that they really meant business.
A point from play from Deirdre Twomey, ensured Cork’s opening score after 11 minutes after the Rebels captain took an impressive score but the balance of possession was very much in Kilkenny’s favour throughout the opening half after which they held a 1-6 to 0-3 advantage.
Kilkenny remained strong after the interval with two goals from Michelle Quilty midway through the second half killing off the game as a contest as the Cats persevered until the finish to ensure a convincing 14 points win.
Meanwhile Scotland won yesterday’s Shinty/Camogie International at Fort William. Although failing to score in the second half, two goals from Jane Nicol ensured a six points to four points win.
Carlow’s Valerie Crean was on target for both of Ireland’s scores with Westmeath goalkeeper Sandra Greville taking the Player of the Match award. The Ireland team included players from Monaghan, Mayo, Westmeath, Louth, Donegal and Carlow, while Margaret Francois from the Brussels club represented Europe.
