Colleges news round up- Cork outfit St Mary’s reach Senior D Semi-final 

On a cold, wind-swept Saturday (Jan 28th)  Cork outfit St. Marys took on St Cuan’s of Athenry in the All Ireland Senior D quarter-finals. The Munster side got off to a great start with a goal from Ann-Marie Ryan in the first minute which was followed shortly by a point from Mairead Corkery.

With ten minutes gone, St Cuans were awarded a penalty. Their free- taker Shauna Ward took a cracker of a shot but fortunately for Macroom, it glided over the bar. Then, in the 14^th minute, a ball struck from midfield by wing –forward Aisling Kelleher found the back of the net.

Conditions underfoot were very tough with players finding it difficult to stay on their feet. But it was Macroom St Mary’s who scored again. A well placed shot by Mairead Corkery into the square was deflected by corner-forward Ann-Marie Ryan past the Galway goalkeeper into the net. St Cuan’s responded immediately with a point leaving the score at 3-1 to 0-2.

In the 21^st minute St Mary’s Ella Curtin skilfully tapped a point over the bar which was closely followed by scores from Aisling Kelleher and Joanne Down.

But Cuans kept the pressure on and scored a point in the 29^th minute followed by a Shauna Ward free, leaving the score of 3-4 to 1-3 at half time. The second half got off to a cracking start with St Cuans dominating possession. 

Their pressure was rewarded as in the 46^th minute St Marys gave away an easy free right in front of their goals which St Cuan’s pointed. Four minutes later another free was awarded and once again the sliotar went straight between the two posts. 

With only 10 minutes remaining the score line stood at 3-4 to 1-5. St Mary’s dominated the remaining minutes and in injury time, Becky Hennigan from St Mary’s fired the ball into the St Cuans net putting the result beyond doubt and sending St Mary’s into the All Ireland Semi-Final.

Colleges news round-up: St Mary’s of Kildare record a unique double

St Mary’s Secondary School, Naas completed a unique and historic double by winning the Minor & Junior Kildare Camogie Schools League titles at the Centre of Excellence, Newbridge on Friday afternoon (Jan 27^th).

The Naas outfit took on Scoil Mhuire of Clane in a closely contested Minor Final which was in the balance until the final seconds.

The midfield area dominated with Loran Begin of St Marys and Annie Harpur putting in fine displays in addition to Ciara Egan of Scoil Mhuire who shone throughout, chipping in with 1-1 for her side.

Naas were strong in defense with Aine Conway, commanding at centre back while up front Katie Kelleghan and Megan Campion were in top scoring from. Despite immense pressure in the closing stages, St Mary’s stood firm and secured a two point win on a score-line of 3-0 to 2-1

In the Junior final, St Mary’s had too much fire power for the Leixlip outfit, Confey College.

St Marys duo, Katie Kelleghan and Megan Campion were on target for their schools but centre forward Sarah Clancy gave a master class in scoring, bagging 2-5.

Confey College battled bravely with goalkeeper Kiva McGing pulling off several superb saves.  Other notable performers for Confey included Sarah Boland and despite a scoreline of 7-7 to 0-0 to St Marys, the Naas side were made to work throughout.

Congratulations to all schools and their teachers and a special word of thanks to Kildare GAA who made the pitch available at Hawkfield.
