Twenty Teams In Action On Opening Weekend of Leagues

The Irish Daily Star National Leagues will throw in on Sunday February 21st with Galway beginning a defence of their Division One crown away to Tipperary. Twenty teams will be in action across two divisions on the opening weekend of the 2016 Leagues. This is the sixth year of the sponsorship of the Camogie Leagues by the Irish Daily Star, one of Ireland’s most popular daily newspapers.

Last year’s beaten league finalists Cork, under the management of Paudie Murray, will commence their campaign with an away trip to neighbours, Limerick. Kilkenny, managed by former All-Ireland winner Ann Downey host Ulster side Derry. Wexford take on Clare, Offaly face Dublin and Division One newcomers, Waterford have a bye in the first weekend of Division One action.

President of the Camogie Association Catherine Neary and Ken O’Connor of the Irish Daily Star were joined by Division One representatives at the launch of the Irish Daily Star National Leagues along with Division One representatives Ashling Thompson (Cork), Elaine O’Meara (Dublin), Niamh Kilkenny (Galway), Claire Whyte (Waterford); Division Two representatives Aoife Trant (Kildare) and Dinah Loughlin (Westmeath); and Division Three representative Joanne Mallon (Armagh).

Speaking about the upcoming Irish Daily Star National Leagues President of the Camogie Association Catherine Neary said:

“I am delighted that the Irish Daily Star National Leagues will commence on February 21st.  The National Leagues are an important component for players to begin their intercounty season and provide an opportunity for emerging players to establish themselves within their county team.

It is important to recognise the commitment and dedication of the players across all counties in their pursuit of a coveted National League title. All of the counties involved will be striving to make the League Finals come May.

“In particular the Camogie Association wishes to acknowledge the continued support of the National Leagues by the Irish Daily Star. The Irish Daily Star have been proud and committed supporters of Camogie for many years and we are looking forward to working with them over the coming years.”

Brian Flanagan, Sports Editor of the Irish Daily Star said:

“The Irish Daily Star are once again delighted to sponsor and support the Camogie National Leagues for the sixth year in succession.
We at the Irish Daily Star are committed to providing the very best coverage of sport at all levels in Ireland to 325,000 readers. We have received a great reaction to our weekly coverage of the games and this helped cement our position as Ireland’s premier sporting newspaper.

"We have enjoyed an excellent relationship with the Camogie Association over the years and we look forward to continuing this. We are honoured to be the title sponsor of the Irish Daily Star National Leagues again this year.”
