Group 1 of the Liberty Insurance All-Ireland Senior Championship got underway last weekend with Dublin and Kilkenny claiming opening weekend wins, and this weekend will see Galway get tehir campaign underway.
Galway lost out in extra-time to eventual champions Kilkenny in last season’s thrilling All-Ireland Semi-Final. On Saturday, they take to the road for their first Liberty Insurance All-Ireland Senior Championship match of 2017 and Dublin will provide the opposition.
This year Galway manager Mark Dunne has called up five from their All-Ireland winning Minor team to his panel – Siobhán McGrath, Carrie Dolan, Sarah Healy, Molly Mannion and Kate Screene. Also included are Maria Cooney and Catherine Finnerty who have re-joined the squad. Therese Manton too has returned after recovering from a cruciate injury.
However, goalkeeper Susan Earner and Molly Dunne are amongst those who have retired after the 2016 campaign. The westerners will also be without Aoife Callanan who is travelling this year. Siobhán Coen is on the injury list after she sustained a cruciate injury.
Molly Dunne, however, is enjoying a new role and will be seen along the sideline as she is now part of the management team.
Dublin got their championship off to a winning start last weekend when they recorded a 2-11 to 1-14 victory over Clare.
