Junior Gael Linn Interprovincial Final

Munster 1-15

Leinster 2-11

Munster’s second half pressure proved too much for their Leinster counterparts on Sunday in the Junior Gael Linn Interprovincial Final played at St Judes in Dublin.

The women from the southern province had the lead only twice all day, at the very start and more importantly in the dying seconds of the game. Waterford star Patricia Jackman converted two 45s in injury time along with Niamh Rockett’s point to help their side snatch victory.

Playing with a strong wind in the opening half Leinster tried to build up a decent lead and Kildare’s Susie O’Carroll (2) and Jane Dolan edged them in front as Niamh Mulcahy, Karen Kelly and Rockett responded for Munster.

Then things began to look brighter for Leinster as Aine Mahony, one of three sisters playing on the day, found the net for the first time. Player of the Match Karen Kelly replied before Louise Mahony added a point.

Susie O’Carroll then hit three on the trot but this was cancelled out as Karen Kelly found the net after nipping in to flick home. Aine Mahony got her second goal five minutes later as Leinster went in at the break leading 2-7 to 1-4.

After the change of ends Leinster began to play deep against the strong wind but this would see the opposition coming on to them. Despite the elements Jane Dolan hit two points that bookended efforts from Niamh Rockett and Niamh Mulcahy.

Orla Curtin and Mulcahy kept Munster in touch before goal scorer Aine Mahony split the posts. Mulcahy got one from play before Siobhan Hurley got what would prove to be Leinster’s last score of the day with five minutes left to play.

Munster would go on to hit unanswered points as the pressure on the Leinster defence proved too much to cope with. Jennie Simpson and Kate Marie Hearne got the scoring going beforePatricia Jackman converted her first 45. Niamh Rockett levelled matters in injury time and then Jackman kept cool and fired over the winner via a 45 in the last minute of additional time.
