Third Level Coaching Academy

Saturday the 7^th of March 2020 sees the inaugural Camogie Association Third Level Coaching Academy take place at Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology. A joint venture between The Camogie Association and GMIT GAA Club sees a vibrant schedule of speakers contribute on the day.

Presenting on the topic of “Sport and Positive Youth Development”, Seamus Morrissey has recently taken up a position as the ATS Co-ordinator with GMIT which involves working with local school and communities to create Pathways to College.  Prior to joining GMIT, Seamus worked in the Community and Voluntary sector for twenty years as well a working as a Lecturer with NUI Galway and The Open University. In 2010, Seamus completed a Doctorate in Education exploring the topics of Educational Disadvantage and Inclusive Education.

Presenting on the topic of nutrition and the role it plays in the development of athletes, Dr Lisa Ryan works as Head of the Department of Natural Sciences in the School of Science and Computing at Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT) in Ireland. Lisa is a Registered Nutritionist (RNutr) who came to GMIT in August 2015 from Monash University in Australia where she was working as a Senior Lecturer in Nutrition and Dietetics. Prior to her appointment at Monash University, Lisa was at Oxford Brookes University in the UK where she was Operations Director of the 1st UK research centre dedicated to Functional Foods.

Since moving to GMIT, Lisa has established the BSc (Hons) in Sport and Exercise and BSc (Hons) in Public Health Nutrition courses and the MSc in Applied Sport and Exercise Nutrition. Her research interests span across both sport and nutrition. Current areas of research include functional foods, metabolic health, food entrepreneurship and the area of concussion management in sport.

Molly Dunne completes the line-up with an insight into the relationship between Leadership & Coaching. Molly’s primary role in GMIT is to facilitate and develop sport for all, from the elite athlete to the recreational student.

Molly retired from intercounty camogie with Galway in 2016 after a very successful playing career. While still heavily involved with her club Eyrecourt, she is now turning her focus to coaching and is the current coach of the Galway Minor Camogie squad & the St Rynaghs Senior Team in Offaly. In 2019 Molly completed a Masters in Leadership & Management exploring the Leadership Styles of All Ireland Winning GAA Managers.
