Two tutors travelled to New York on the 11th of June to deliver the “”Get a Grip”” Camogie course, Yvonne Byrne and Damien Young.
The aim of the visit to New York was to up skill active and beginner Camogie coaches in the New York area. The theory part of the course took place in the engineering building linked to Manhattan University and the practical took place in Van Cortlandt Park, both located beside Gaelic Park.
A wide range of experienced participants attended the course, some had been coaching Camogie, some heavily involved in coaching other sports and wanted to get involved in Camogie coaching and some beginners who have daughters starting to play the game and were willing to get involved coaching at their club.
Five clubs were represented at the course. All participants were very enthusiastic about coaching and were delighted to get some help in the area. Fourteen participants, twelve females and two males have now completed the “”Get a Grip”” Camogie Course.
The qualified coaches will now prepare teams to take part in the CYC games, which will be hosted in New York this year. This will be the first time Camogie will be represented at the CYC games and the coaches were determined to have as many girls involved as possible.
Both Damien and Yvonne would also like to pay tribute to how well they were looked after by their hosts and would like to thank them sincerely for all their help and hospitality.
