CIT – V- UUJ

ST LOMAN’S GAA MULLINGAR

TUESDAY 29TH NOVEMBER

In the first Championship match of the 2011/2012 season, beaten Ashbourne Shield finalists took on Division 1 League Runners Up UUJ.  Due to weather conditions a last minute decision was made to play the match in St Loman’s GAA.  UUJ were first to settle into the game and had two points on the board before they were shell shocked by three goals in quick succession from CIT.  Scorer in chief Denise Luby was tormenting the UUJ defence, ably assisted by Erin Corkery.  UUJ managed to stop the rot with a point and a goal just before the break but it was CIT who finished the half the strongest and led by seven points at half time.

If UUJ were to mount a comeback it was essential they did so with a good start and after some stern words at half time, UUJ showed their intent with a goal thirty seconds after the restart from full forward Karen Kielt.  UUJ continued to pile on the pressure an chip away at the CIT lead but the CIT centre back was immense and it soon became clear that UUJ would need goals if they were to win the game.  With Sabrina Larkin and Cathy Carey strong at the back for UUJ, they continued to drive forward and were rewarded when Kielt struck for two goals.  Denise Luby managed to tag on a few points for the Cork side and an enthralling game of camogie followed.  Points from Shannon Graham and Sara Louise Carr left two in it with only minutes remaining, CIT were then awarded a penalty which would have sealed it for the Cork College but UUJ goalkeeper was up to the task and the penalty was saved.  Time was running out now and UUJ were two points down when the impressive Karen Kielt scored another goal for the Belfast side who took the lead for only the second time in the match.  CIT had time to mount one more attack but the UUJ defence held strong and managed to clear their lines to see out the final whistle.  The final score was 5-09 to 3-13.  UUJ will now compete in the Ashbourne Competition while CIT will go to the Purcell.
