Champions take 9 places while All-Ireland finalists claim three

All-Ireland champions Cork dominate this year’s Camogie All-Stars team, sponsored by Liberty Insurance, presented at Citywest tonight (Saturday, November 1st) by guest of honour Fiona Coghlan, Irish Women’s Rugby captain and President of the Camogie Association Aileen Lawlor.

Cork centre-back Gemma O’Connor and wing-forward Jennifer O’Leary, collected their eight All-Star awards respectively while dual stars Rena Buckley and Briege Corkery were also rewarded for their displays in a season which saw the Rebels win their 25th All-Ireland title.

Cork defender Eimear O’Sullivan, capped off a superb season, following her player of the match performance in the All-Ireland Final to claim her first award at wing-back and team-mate Joanne O’Callaghan was named at corner-back. Orla Cotter and Katriona Mackey took places in the forward line.

All-Ireland finalists Kilkenny claimed three places with Collette Dormer at wing-back, Anne Dalton at midfield and Michelle Quilty named at right-corner forward.

Máire McGrath claimed her first All-Star award at full-back and the third ever All-Star award for Clare, who reached this year’s Division One League final. Galway corner-back Sarah Dervan and Wexford’s Ursula Jacob completed the 2014 line-up.

Speaking at the event President of the Camogie Association Aileen Lawlor said:

“Congratulations to this year’s All-Stars and Soaring Star recipients, whose exploits on the field of play have earned them an accolade, which is highly valued by all players. The All-Stars are a national recognition of the skill, athleticism, dedication and sportsmanship of our players, who have thrilled and delighted supporters with their displays during another superb championship season.

I also want to congratulate Joe Quaid, Manager of the Year, who, following the heartbreak of last year’s All-Ireland final defeat, guided his team back to Croke Park, eventually claiming a much sought after All-Ireland title.

I want to commend all of this year’s nominees and recipients and also thank our sponsors Liberty Insurance for their support for this prestigious event.”

Speaking at the awards on behalf of Liberty Insurance, CEO Patrick O'Brien said:

“At Liberty Insurance, we are delighted to sponsor the 2014 Camogie All-Star Awards. It has been a very special year for the Camogie Association as it celebrates its 110th year anniversary, and I'd like to congratulate all of the award nominees and winners here this evening for their outstanding achievements in yet another thrilling season.”

Limerick Manager Joe Quaid was named as the Manager of the Year after Limerick claimed the All-Ireland Intermediate title in September.

The 2014 Soaring Stars and Intermediate Soaring Stars, announced in early October,  were also presented with Down and Laois, dominating the selection, taking eleven places on the team.

Limerick duo Caoimhe Costelloe and Niamh Mulcahy collected Intermediate Soaring Stars, along with Catherine Foley of Kilkenny.

Each of this year’s All-Star and Soaring Star recipients were presented with a specially commissioned piece of work by sculptor Jarlath Daly in addition to a commemorative jersey, while each member of this year’s All-Stars team received a personal voucher from Liberty Insurance to the value of €500.
