Munster

The Munster Development Squads Coaches Workshop took place in Mallow GAA Complex on Saturday January 19th from 10.00am – 2.00pm. 23 coaches from the 6 Munster counties attended. The workshop targeted the county U14 & U15 development squad mentors.

Cork senior camogie coach George Fitzgibbon delivered a Wall Ball session (see Facebook page facebook.com/officialcamogie) for a short recording) which focussed on developing correct striking techniques and included numerous innovative drills to maximise the enjoyment and effectiveness of a wall ball session. Sincere thanks to Mary-Kate, Grainne and Emer of the Milford Camogie Club who were the demonstrators, working with George for the wall ball session!

This practical was followed by an excellent presentation from All Ireland winning player and current Cork senior selector Ellen Clifford on best practice in relation to the organisational aspects involved in building a successful team. Coaches were also shown samples of the Eat Smart, Move Smart diary.

Then it was back to the indoor astro turf arena of the Mallow GAA club for ‘Drills Galore’ with current Cork Minor Hurling coach Frank Flannery. Frank also coached Cork seniors to an All Ireland title in 2009 and is also currently in charge of the Milford Camogie team preparing to face Oulart the Ballagh in the All Ireland Camogie Club Semi Finals on February 3rd.

Players from the Aghabullogue division U15 team were the demonstrators for a series of drills and games, focussing on taking scores, finding players and team play. This was an excellent session and there was a marked improvement in the players execution from start to finish of the session. Almost all of the drills incorporated a contest and the players also needed to be tuned in and concentrate on making the correct decision in possession.

Feedback from the coaches in attendance was very positive. A follow up workshop will be held before the end of February, looking at incorporating appropriate exercise and fitness levels into camogie sessions for these age groups.
