This was a game that Wexford deserved to win as they outplayed a somewhat out-of-sorts Dublin side in perfect conditions at Kennedy Park. Wexford opened the scoring with points from Kate Kelly, Una Leacy and Michelle O’Leary before Dublin registered their first score a point from Ciara Lucey after 15 minutes. Points from Rose Marie Breen (2), and Ursula Jacob  gave Wexford a 0-6 to 0-2 lead after 24 minutes. A Niamh Taylor goal on 25 minutes settled the Dublin nerves. Ciara Lucey and Kate Kelly exchanged points to leave the half time score Wexford 0-7 Dublin 1-3.

Wexford started the second half in commanding fashion scoring 1-6 without reply in the first 10 minutes – the scores coming from Kate Kelly 1-3, Una Leacy 0-2 and Lenny Holohan 0-1. This put the game beyond the Dub’s reach but they never gave up. They were awarded a penalty on the 20 minute mark. Ciara Lucey sent the sliotar to the back of the net. Kate Kelly and Una Leacy added further points for Wexford before Ciara Lucey pointed a Dublin point late in the game to leave the final score Wexford 1-15 Dublin 2-4.

Playing the All Ireland champions in this mood in their own back yard is no easy task. Despite Sunday’s loss there were some fine performances among the Dublin players.
