Having won three from four games and finished as group runners-up, Galway are in great form ahead of this weekend’s Liberty Insurance All-Ireland Senior Championship Quarter-Final against Tipperary.

Galway’s captain Heather Cooney spoke to us about how the Championship has gone so far, “Yeah it’s great to be out of the group and heading to the Quarter-Finals. They’ve been tough games and we’ve learned a lot about ourselves which is good going into a Quarter-Final”.

Galway have impressed so far in this year’s Championship having overcome Dublin and Waterford quite comfortably before they suffered a 5 point defeat to reigning All-Ireland and League champions Kilkenny. “Kilkenny was a very tough game and they just got the better of us on the day”.

However on the final day with it all to play for in Group 1, Galway defeated Clare by 2 goals in Ennis to secure second spot and to set up a Quarter-Final tie with Tipp.

Looking ahead to this Saturday’s knockout clash with the Premier County, Cooney says “We’re just looking forward to it really, they’re off the back of a good win as well. We’re just training hard and we had a round of club games last week too so hopefully it will all go well for us”.

The Tribeswomen last won the O’Duffy cup back in 2013 and they will hope it’s only a matter of time until they regain the title as they have suffered narrow losses to Cork and Kilkenny in recent Finals and Semi-Finals, respectively. Manager Mark Dunne will be hoping this will be their year, however he won’t be looking past Saturday as they need to overcome a resilient Tipp side who have got their confidence back.
