Supporters were treated to a hugely exciting game last Sunday at the Shield Final between two evenly matched teams, Johnstownbridge and Cappagh. Minutes into the first half Aoife Doran for Johnstownbridge scored the opening goal followed shortly afterwards by a point from her teammate Orla Dorrity. Orla has given an outstanding performance for her side this season. The teams battled it out throughout the opening half, with Cappaghs efforts paying off with a goal just at the end of the first half from Jane Healy.
In the second half Orla Dorrity and Shauna Beatty both scored great goals. Shauna O’Donoghue, Louise Keogh, Orla McManus and Carol Hurley for Johnstownbridge kept the game moving at tremendous pace. For Cappagh, Joanne Mulligan in midfield gave a great performance and her teammates Laura Morrin, Paula Shine, Eithne Gibbons and Catherine Nealon also had a fine game. Both teams fought with admirable energy and skill. Cappaghs efforts were deservedly rewarded with another goal from Jane Healy and a goal and point from Joanne Mulligan to level the score at the end of the second half.
This great battle continued into extra time with Orla Dorrity for the Bridge scoring a point and Cappagh quickly responding with a goal from Joanne Mulligan. Supporters and players alike were totally caught up in the excitement of a thrilling contest. Just before the final whistle Aoife Doran scored the winning goal for Johnstownbridge. A great performance by all – well done and thanks to both teams for a most enjoyable game. A close call – final score Johnstownbridge 4-2 to Cappagh 4-1.
