What is Lá na gClub?

Lá na gClub is a national day that champions our clubs and communities, the lifeblood of our Gaelic Games. It’s an opportunity to celebrate and thank our incredible volunteers, while welcoming members and newcomers to the club for a fun-filled day out.

Whether it’s your first day or your hundredth year, everyone’s welcome at Lá na gClub!

When is Lá na gClub?

Lá na gClub will take place on Easter Monday, April 1st, 2024.

It was first introduced in 2009 to mark the GAA’s 125th anniversary. As 2024 is a year of remarkable milestones across the family of Gaelic Games, it’s the perfect time to bring it back.

This year, we have so much to celebrate:

  • GAA’s 140th anniversary
  • Camogie’s 120th anniversary
  • Handball’s 100th anniversary
  • LGFA’s 50th anniversary

Many clubs already host annual open or fun days. We want to give these days the attention they deserve by bringing them under one National Day of Celebration, firmly establishing Lá na gClub as an annual fixture in the Gaelic Games calendar.

What clubs should take part?

Every club, everywhere! All Gaelic Games clubs at home and abroad are encouraged to mark this special day.

Who should be there on the day?

Everyone is welcome at Lá na gClub! It’s a day for members, their families, and friends to get together and celebrate the people and place that make the club so special and unique. It’s also a day of outreach. Let newcomers know your club is a place where they’ll be welcomed to get involved, make friends, and learn new skills. Finally, it’s a day to celebrate community spirit and to support other community initiatives alongside your club.

Our hope is that Lá na gClub will encourage more people to play, attend and learn about our games and communities, and ultimately become members and volunteers.

How should we promote our club day?

  • Use your club website and social channels.
  • Communicate a date in the diary for all club members and ask them to spread the word.
  • Put posters in the local community.
  • Put a banner outside the club.
  • Press release to local newspapers, radio stations and on your website.
  • News item in local newsletter e.g. church newsletter.
  • Reach out to club sponsors.

What activities should we do on the day?

The most important thing about Lá na gClub is that it’s inclusive and enjoyable for all.

It’s an opportunity to showcase all our positives – our people, our games, our values, our culture, and our communities.

There are endless ways to showcase and tell the story of your club. How you celebrate is up to you, but here are some ideas to consider –

  • ‘Introduction to Camogie’ – a fun training session outlining the basics. Should involve lots of fun games and plenty of movement!
  • Blitzes for all ages and abilities – keep it fun and fair with an emphasis on participation, not competition.
  • Social Camogie blitzes.
  • Poc Fada competition.
  • Healthy Club activities like a fun run / club walk.
  • GAA for All’ activities such as an inclusive All-Star games or Fun & Run for persons with additional needs.
  • Quiz / Tráth na gCeist.
  • Honour members of the Club who have given exceptional service on or off the field.
  • Newcomer Award, Unsung Hero Award.
  • Food e.g. BBQ.
  • Entertainment/DJ/Music playlist.
  • Community showcase – showcasing other local community-based groups.
  • Video diary for attendees to come and leave a message.

Safeguarding

All activities for children must be in line with the Gaelic Games Code of Behaviour (Underage). This includes adequately trained personnel to oversee the events and adhering to the supervision requirements and the female/male ratio to children required.
