The Camogie Association is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of esteemed RTE GAA commentator Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh.

Uachtarán an Cumann Camógaíochta Brian Molloy has paid his deepest respects to the renowned voice of GAA for over 25 years.

‘Mícheál’s passing is a moment of profound sadness for all Gaelic Games supporters at the loss of someone who touched the lives of so many people over the span of his career. That sadness is of course balanced by an immediate urge to smile as we all remember his funny but beautifully poetic, descriptive turns of phrase. His love of Gaelic Games was equalled by his love of ár dteanga náisiúnta, and he had a remarkable knack of gently transitioning from Irish to English and back again mid-sentence. It never jarred, it always seemed perfectly natural. Mícheál’s voice, his knowledge of the game and the players, his natural excitement and his unique turn of phrase brought people directly to the side of the pitch, no matter where in the world they were listening at the time. “The stopwatch has stopped. It’s up to God and the referee now. The referee is Pat Horan. God is God” – and I’ve no doubt God has welcomed Ireland’s broadcasting legend to his side in heaven.’

Our thoughts are with Mícheál’s family, friends and former colleagues at this time.

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam uasal.
