Newlywed Wexford Captain Aoife O’Connor ahead of Saturday’s NL final

IT was back to training this week for newlywed Aoife O’Connor who married RT+ Sunday Game analyst Declan Ruth on Friday. Aoife postponed her honeymoon to Monday next in order to captain the Wexford senior camogie team who play Tipperary in the National League Division One final on Saturday.
She is coming back down to earth after the weekend admitting it would be a æbit of a adjustment’ to attend training.

 

“”We had a fabulous week and we are still on a high from the wedding. Camogie was put to one side for a day. We had the girls from the Wexford team and from my own club in Rathnure, they gave us a guard of honour along with Declans’ Wexford mates.””

 

Aoife claimed once she discussed the situation with her husband, there was never any question of not staying around.
“”We got the fixtures early on and I knew if we got to the league final it would coincide and that I would have to consider staying at home for a week. The closer we got to the wedding we were winning and winning, so when the situation arose I said it to Declan and in fairness it was no big hassle. Declan is involved in GAA himself so he fully understood.””

 

Her dad is Teddy O’Connor – famous All Ireland winning Wexford hurling captain from the 70’s. On Saturday, there will be five O’Connor sisters in action as the Slaneysiders are involved in the Division One and Two finals.
“”My four sisters will be lining out. Claire is corner back on the Division One team, while Niamh, Ciara and Eimear are with the Division Two side. They were my bridesmaids on Friday,”” she added.

 

“”To get married and then be preparing for a league final, I’ve had a great week, and possibly it might get even better.””
