Intermediate Camoige County Final

Holycross 1.3 Shannon Rovers 2.12

Holycross and Shannon Rovers served up an entertaining Intermediate
County final on Sunday last in Toomevara. Despite challenging weather
conditions both sides served up some fine cam¾ige to keep their
supporters entertained.
Rovers were first to open their account in the fifth minute with a
point from corner forward Marion Ryan from a Andrea Davis delivery.
Ryan was again on target with two further points in the eight and tenth
minute as Rovers began to stamp their authority on the game with
Lorraine Davis especially driving plenty of quality ball to the Rovers
forwards. Further ominious signs came for Holycross when in the twenty
first minute Claire Horan burst through their defence to coolly slot
home a goal. Holycross to their credit continued to battle and
attacking play from Linda Fanning resulted in a free which Noreen
Flanagan pointed. Again Holycross pressed forward and forced a 45 which
Flanagan was again on hand to point. Rovers however in determined
fashion finished the half with a superb individual effort from Lorraine
Davis who swept through the defence converting a point for her side to
leave the halftime score Shannon Rovers 1.4 Holycross 0.2.
Holycross began the second half in determined fashion and despite
playing against a forceful breeze were quickest off the mark with a
goal from Sarah Ryan from a Joan Stakelum pass. The tempo of the game
immediately rose with both sides searching for the next score. It was
Rovers who found the range with a pointed free from Aoife McLoughney.
Minutes later McLoughney collected a clearance from Amanda Bourke and
again slotted the ball over the bar to increase Rovers lead to four
points. Holycross remained in contention but were finding the Rovers
backline a stern test as they continually swept the ball up the field
to where Claire Horan was proving a handful for the Holycross defence.
She consolidated Rovers lead in the eight minute bustling her way
goalwards her initial shot was bravely stopped but she latched onto the
breaking ball to find the net for her second goal of the day. Rovers
now upped the ante and three unanswered points from Aoife McLoughney
from two frees and one from play pushed Rovers closer to the title. The
Holycross reply came from Mary Rose Flanagan who saw her shot blast
over the bar when a goal chance was eminent. Rovers however were swift
in their reply with Aoife McLoughney taking a fine point from an acute
angle. The same player had the final say in the scoring stakes with a
further point from play and a pointed free in the twenty third minute.
Both sides contested the remainder of the game keenly. Holycross
despite their best efforts were not able to reduce the Rovers lead
while Shannon Rovers remained resolute in their play to the final
whistle taking the title on a scoreline of 2.12 to 1.3.
