Tipperary’s Toomevara wins Naomh Jude inaugural All-Ireland under 13 Camogie Sevens

At the end of a spectacular day’s Camogie Tipperary’s Toomevara defeated Cork’s Valley Rovers in the final of the Naomh Jude All-Ireland inaugural under 13 Sevens played in glorious sunshine at Tymon Park on Saturday, 13 September.

This Championship which is officially approved by Cumann Cam¾gaÝochta na nGael gives a first opportunity for young players to win an All-Ireland Championship in pre-FÚile year.

The under 12 champions 2008 from the Senior Camogie counties were invited to compete in this competition. There were 2 groups of 4 teams with the winners and runners-up going forward to the semi-finals.

Valley Rovers (Cork), Thomastown (Kilkenny), Oulart The Ballagh (Wexford), and the host club  Naomh Jude did battle in group A. Thomastown  and Valley Rovers emerged from this group to the semi-finals.

Lucan Sarsfields (Dublin),  Toomevara (Tipperary), Na Piarsaigh (Limerick) and Clarinbridge (Galway) contested Group B. The play-off games in this group were very even and competitive with Toomevara and Lucan Sarsfields progressing to the semi-finals.

Dublin‘s Lucan Sarsfields and Cork‘s Valley Rovers played a very exciting semi-final which ended all square at full time.  The Lucan girls were unlucky to lose in sudden death extra time. Toomevara, who impressed all through the competition, proved too strong for Thomastown in the second semi-final.

The skilful Toomevara girls were just brilliant in the final against the Cork champions. They started well scoring 2 early goals in quick succession. They continued to dominate the game despite the best efforts of the Cork side and eventually ran out worthy winners 5-7 to 1-2. Toomevara’s Cliodhna Ryan gave superb performances throughout the competition and it came as no surprise to the crowds who attended the games when she was chosen as Player of the Competition.

St. Judes ran a very successful Family Fun Day, BBQ and Fun Table Quiz in conjunction with this Sevens competition. The organising committee, under the chairmanship of John Coman, together with members of St. Judes, deserve great credit for the efficient and friendly manner which this competition was run.

The Competition was sponsored by Johnston, Mooney and O’Brien.
