MUNSTER TITLE FOR WATEROFRD U16’S

Waterford 2-10  Cork 2-7

After a titanic battle in Fraher field Dungarvan on Sunday July 19th Waterfords u16 camogie team beat Cork‘s u16 team in the Munster U16B championship final. This game set out to be a thriller, with both teams all out to capture the Munster title.

It was Waterfords Aoife Hannon who registered the first score of the game from a well taken point in the first five minutes of the game followed by Corks Laura Burke who scored the second point three minutes later. There was nothing between both teams at this stage as each team battled hard to win the ball. Several minutes later Waterfords Michelle Tobin slotted the ball over for another point which was to be Waterfords final score of the half. After this, Cork came into the game and dominated the remainder of the half scoring 1-3 in this time frame leaving the half time score of Waterford 0-2 Cork 1-4.

The second half began, with Cork coming out with great confidence, with Corks Susan Brosnan scoring the first goal of the half three minutes into the half.At this stage Waterford seemed to find it hard to break through the Cork defence as they marked the Waterford forwards very tightly. Two more points were scored by Cork without reply from Waterford leaving a ten point deficit between both teams. It seemed at this stage that the game was slipping from Waterford.

On the twelfth minute of the half the introduction of substitute Clara Arrons proved to be a great move on Waterfords behalf when a ball that was dropped in to the forward line from out field was pulled into the back of the Cork net by Clara, which lifted the spirits of the Waterford girls. Corks Susan Brosnan scored the next point of the game before Waterfords other substitute Emer Fennell scored Waterfords second goal.

The Waterford side were growing in confidence and Cork were unable to counteract it. Indeed for the final fifteen minutes of the game Waterford were winning the ball in all areas of the field with great determination and Cork were unable to stop them, scoring  1-7 without reply in the last fifteen minutes ending the score Waterford 2-10 Cork 2-7.

Great credit is due to the girls as they never gave up even tho’ things did look bad going into the last quarter of the game. As the saying goes ‘never give up until the final whistle blows’. Many thanks to the selectors Dan Geoghegan, Morgan Conroy, Eilish McGlone and Kieran Tobin who gave up allot of their spare time over the last six months training and travelling with the girls to matches.
