Cavan Camogie held a development day for U17 players on Saturday 10th October in Lacken GFC. The aim of the day was to introduce their players and coaches to mental preparation, nutritional information, flexibility and injury prevention. As well as this the players were given practical coaching sessions in dynamic stretching, goalkeeping, forward play and defensive play.

Development Day Programme

Cavan Camogie’s Chair and Vice Chair – Madeline Argue and Michael O’Rourke kicked off the day by welcoming all the particpants to Lacken and presented drinks from Tipperary Water for all involved. The fact that both Chair and Vice Chair were in attendance shows the importance that Cavan Camogie have been placing on their development squads in recent years.

The day then started with an excellent icebreaking routine which was facilitated by Siobhan Lynch (Development Squad Mentor) this left all the squad members ready to particpate actively in the planned sessions of the day.

The first workshop session of the day was – ‘Setting Goals’ which was facilitated by Ger Gribben RDO. This session introduced the players to the benefit of setting Goals/Targets in training and matches.

The group then moved outside for a practical session on dynamic warm-up and stretches which was taken by Niamh Brady (Camogie 3rd Level scholarship recipient).

This was followed by a Goalkeeping session which was taken by Rory Donnellan (Cavan Camogie Coach) and a session on attacking and defending whch was taken by Ger Gribben.

Niamh then finished the outdoor practical work with a cool down session.

The group then had an excellent lunch which was provided by various volunteers on the day and was much appreciated by all involved on the day.

After lunch the group went through a nutritional and hydration quiz, which was then followed by a presentation from Niamh Brady (Niamh is currently studying physiotherapy in Trinity college) on Flexibility and Injury Prevention. This was a very informative session which was enhanced with the many models of joints and muscles that Niamh had taken with her.

The day finished with a workshop on ‘Improving Your Mental Strength’. This was facilitated by Ger Gribben and introduced the development squad players and mentors to mental strength training techniques such as visualisation and self talk.

This was the first day of it’s kind that Cavan Camogie have run and the hope is to run more days like this each year to introduce development squad players and mentors to new coaching initiatives.

Special thanks must be given to Lacken GAA club for the use of their excellent facilities, to the many volunteers who provided and served the lunch and last but not least Anne Donnellan (Cavan’s Development Squad Officer) and all the Juvenile committee who planned and organised the day, without their drive and forward thinking the day would not have been possible!
