The Camogie Association launches Female Referee Academy Programme

The Camogie Association are delighted to launch its new female referee and mentoring initiative, the Female Referee Academy, in partnership with Sport Ireland’s Women in Sport Policy.

The Female Referee Academy will primarily look at increasing and developing the number of women officiating and refereeing our game around the country and our 2022 programme will offer places to 54 females.

The Female Referee Academy Programme aims to increase the number of women officiating and refereeing camogie by providing a programme that supports their development through both training and mentoring. The programme aligns with our National Development Plan, recently launched Referee Strategy and established Peter Downey Referee Academy, a key objectives is the recruitment, retention and support for female referees and officials. In addition, the role in which current or former female officials can play in passing on their knowledge and support to newly qualified and inexperienced referees is key behind the programme in a mentoring capacity.

The Female Referee Academy will seek to develop the referee in areas beyond the rules of the game. Participants on the programme will be educated in areas of physical fitness, tactical awareness, technical ability, mental fitness, lifestyle while being supported by a mentor.

Launching the Female Referee Academy Programme, Camogie Association President Hilda Breslin said:

We are delighted to launch the Camogie Association Female Referee Academy today.

Working in conjunction with our recently launched Referee Strategy, the Female Referee Academy will help encourage and establish more female representation within our match officials. Increasing the standard and number of female national and club referees, offering insight, and mentoring. We are looking forward to seeing the up take from the programme and hope that our future female referees will find it a key pillar in their development. It is vital that our current young and future players have positive female role models across all sectors of our game.
