Offaly Juniors Back to Winning Ways
Offaly 1-9
Laois 1-3
Offaly started the game brightly and Aoife Corrigan picked off two well taken points from play within the first five minutes after some good work by captain Marion Crean and Sheila Sullivan. Michaela Morkan got on the scoresheet on six minutes after Karen Nugent was fouled. Laois got their first point from a free by Louise Mahoney on 10 mins. The same player then put Laois ahead when a free from midfield dropped from Audrey Kennedy’s hand to the Offaly net on 13 mins.
Eimear Delaney then got a good point from play for Laois before Arlene Watkins got a superb goal from the left wing beating two players before hitting the back of the Laois net with a great shot on 17 mins. Siobhan Flannery then got a nice point from play collecting a good delivery from Linda Sullivan who was having a very good game in the half back line. Laois ended the scoring on 23 mins with a pointed free to leave the half time score Offaly 1-4 Laois 1-3.
It took Offaly a while to settle into the second half, on five mins Siobhan Flannery pointed from play and from the puckout Offaly won a line ball which Marion Crean took quickly to Siobhan and she slotted between the posts to put Offaly three points ahead. Laois were unable to get through the Offaly defense with Karen Brady, Lorraine Keena and Michaela Morkan working really hard but it was the two Sullivans Linda and Sheila who cleared ball after ball.
Michaela Morkan pointed a free and Michelle Davis got on the scoresheet with a well taken point after good work by Fiona Stephens. Debbie Flynn
This was a good victory for Offaly and their first chance to play some good camogie as the weather conditions up to this game were very hard to cope with. They held Laois scoreless in the second half and great credit to the backs for this as they worked their socks off all day. While 1-9 was a good score it could have been much more as some shots were wide and points should have been taken instead of going for goals.
The Laois keeper brought off some good saves in the second half too. But the team are growing in confidence with each game and are adapting to the better weather conditions. Michelle Davis and Linda Sullivan were the best for Offaly on the day but overall it was a good team performance. The next game is against Armagh next weekend with another home venue.
