National League Division 4: Antrim 1-16 vs Tipperary 1-8

Round-Up:

Down were crowned National Division 3 champions yesterday overcoming Laois by a single point.

Captain Catherine McGourty was the star of the show scoring a personal tally of 11 points and manager Joe Baldwin praised his player saying: “”Catherine was outstanding today, she has been very committed this season and it’s nice to see her getting rewarded for her dedication.””

Having played with the wind in the first-half Down went into the break with a 0-7 to 1-1 lead. Laois emerged strong in the second-half driven by Sarah Cuddy’s first-half goal and put Down under constant pressure but Fionnula Carr and Lisa McCirckard remained strong even when Sarah Ann Fitzgerald scored another goal for Laois to set up a nail biting finish.

“”It’s great to win, we haven’t had any silverware in a while. We’ve got a lot of new players on the team and a lot of young players so it’s great for them,”” said Mairin MacAleenan.

Baldwin hopes that his sides win will inspire them to greater things, “”Hopefully we can use this as a stepping stone for the Championship. We know that we still have a lot to do and a few things to work on but we’re delighted with the win,”” he said.

Only one game was played in Division 2 on Saturday, as Clare could not field against Derry meaning the Oak Leaf girls picked up another two points. While Antrim had a comfortable win over Tipperary which ensures them at least a place in the play-offs.

Captain Jane Adams was in superb form once again scoring a remarkable nine points three of them from play. Emma and Grace McMullan were both impressive once again scoring three and two points respectively.
