Junior Camogie League Final
Donaghmore/Ashbourne 1-5 v Dunderry 0-2
The last time these two teams met this year the word used to describe the game was a battle and this time was no different. The game had almost perfect setting in the facilities in Trim GAA club on a sunny spring day with plenty of camogie fans cheering on the teams. After losing out by 3 points to Dunderry at the beginning of the league Donaghmore Ashbourne’s determination to reverse their look was obvious from the beginning. Lizzy Lynch started the scoring ten minutes into the first half with a point.
The Dunderry defence were unwilling to back down easily and it continued to be a hard hitting game until the final whistle. Unfortunately for Dunderry, Referee Una Cearney from Armagh, gave a second yellow card to their number 6 which meant Dunderry where left with 14 players on the pitch. In the closing minutes of the first half Donaghmore Ashbourne capitalised on their advantage when Dunderry cleared the sliotar from the goal mouth but went straight to a free Donaghmore forward Mairead Finn who put in the back of the net!
Half Time Don/Ash 1-4 Dunderry 0-2
The half time talks for both must have been interesting. Donaghmore/Ashbourne being reminded of their loss in a league final two years ago to Kiltale after being ahead at half time and Dunderry being motivated to win with the obvious handicap of just 14 players. It was clear that Dunderry found some inspiration at half time as they came back a fierce as ever. The Donaghmore/Ashbourne backs were put under severe pressure even with the extra player.
However as the saying goes ‘when the going gets though the though get going’! Emma Tormey seemed to relish to extra workload and cleared every ball that came her way. Nerves of steel were shown by goal keeper Aideen Ferry and the two backs Lorna Dervan and Emma Tormey when they faced the nightmare situation of a penalty in the dying minutes of a final. The goal could have meant a very different outcome if it had made its way into the Don/Ash net. The three girls knew what they faced and once again showed courage and defiance as they made little Dunderry’s attempt to even the score with Emma Tormey skilfully catching the ball and clearing it with ease.
Although it was not all good news for Donaghmore/ Ashbourne as a key player Liz Keegan had to leave the pitch after getting a serious head injury. She was
