Wins for Armagh and Derry in U16B All Ireland Championship

The current holders got off to a flying start in the first round of the All-Ireland Under 16B Championship on Saturday.  At a windy Cahore pitch in Ballinascreen, the young oak leaf side totally dominated a spirited Carlow team, picking off some lovely scores.  Grainne McNicholl was particularly effective at left half forward, scoring 1-3 in the first half.  Derry were picking a great head of steam before the break which they couldn’t maintain in the second half.  A strong, swirling breeze disrupted the attack while greater impetus from Carlow put Derry under much greater pressure defensively but they held on well to secure the win. 

Derry now travel to Down this Saturday in the next round, who defeated Waterford by a point at the weekend.  The new Derry manager, Eugene Burns, will be well pleased with their first outing but will know that the Down game will a tougher encounter.

Derry Scorers: Grianne McNicholl 1-3, Mia Glasgow & Teresa McElroy 0-2 each.

Carlow scorers: Ciara Quirke 1-0.

Win For Armagh U-16 Camogs
The Orchard camogs took on the Royal County Meath in Keady on Saturday in the first round of the All Ireland B Championship. Armagh had worked hard in their preparations for this competition and this was evident throughout the match. Leading 3-3 to 0-0 at the interval the Orchard calini took on the elements of the weather in the second half. Meath applied severe pressure but a resilient Amy Lavery in goals denied them many scoring chances. Although Armagh didn’t register a score in the second period excellent teamwork ensured a fine win. Final score Armagh 3-3 Meath 1-2.

Armagh scorers Noeleen Bradley 1-1, Aoibhean Murphy 1-0, Fionnuala Kelly 0-1 Orla Curry 1-1. Meath scorers Katie King 1-1, Aishling Fagan 0-1. Armagh travel to Loais on Saturday to play in the nest round of the competition.

Tyrone Book Final Showdown with Monaghan on April 26th
 
A comprehensive win for visitors Tyrone over debutantes Donegal at Carndonagh booked a final placing with ladies in waiting, Monaghan in this years Ulster Junior Championship.
Donegal won the applause on the day, fielding in the Ulster championship for the first time in over a decade. The home side battled against a biting breeze and the more experienced Tyrone, but goals from Maeve McGurk, Shauna Jordan and Emma McErlean sealed the deal before the turn of play. The ball rarely left the Donegal half in the opening period as Rionnach Lavery and Aisling Corr dominated midfield. More of the same followed in the second half with all but a few sporadic Donegal raids stonewalled by a solid Tyrone defence. 

Joint Manager Sinead O’Neill was delighted “” we are all really looking forward to the final. It has been a few years since we last competed at this level, but we have a good panel, who are trainimg well together. This really reflects the solid work being done in Tyrone to redevelop the game. We have ten clubs… four at senior club level. The Ulster Club Premier and Mid-Ulster leagues have gone a long way in helping regenerate camogie in the County.””
