Weekend preview

Two very experienced candidates are going for this position, -Joan O’Flynn of Kildare and Catherine O’Hara of Antrim.

 Born in Cork, but residing in Kildare for many years, Joan O’Flynn has held many administrative positions such as Chairperson of the National Strategic Plan Committee while she also sits on Management. The current PRO for Kildare she sees many challenges ahead “”my vision for camogie is that as many young people as possible get the opportunity to play and enjoy our sport. This means reaching out to introduce the game to rural areas, developing urban centres, working with groups and in areas that may not have a traditional hurling or camogie background and supporting the game amongst the Irish abroad””.

Antrim born O’Hara first wore the Antrim jersey with pride at the tender age of fifteen and since then has refereed at intercounty as well as holding many administrative positions including her current position of Chairperson of Ulster Council. An experienced administrator she belivies that  “”the club is very important as that is where development begins””.

While this election is expected to be a close tie many other decisions wil also be on the cards such as a motion regarding the increasing of the affiliation fees. An increase here would be of major importance for future development. Stepping down this weekend after nine years in the voluntary position as National PRO is Mßire UÝ ScolaÝ.

While the indoor work is important this weekend, Cork and Kilkenny will battle it out for a place in the latter stages of the National League. If Cork are to see it to the final then they will have to beat Kilkenny on Sunday, while Dublin must travel to Wexford in the only other Division 1 game at the weekend. Dublin are out of contention but pride would be important to the visitors and they might just catch the home side on the hop as they will have just returned from their holiday in Orlando. Should Cork and Wexford win it will involve a three way play off between them and Kilkenny for a right to meet Galway in the final. 
Four other games will go ahead in Division two, between Waterford and League table toppers Clare, while Cork will host the Kilkenny girls. Tipperary will play last weekend’s impressive winners Derry at a half way venue, while Galway will travel to Wexford.
