The game of the weekend sees a re-match of last years National League and All-Ireland Championship finals as Cork host Wexford on Sunday.

Cork are the reigning National League champions but relinquished their All-Ireland crown to the Slaney-siders last September in Croke Park.  Following that loss Cork have seen the resignation of their manager John Cronin and coach Fiona O’Driscoll, while several of their high profile players, including All-Star Jennifer O’Leary, have declared they are unavailable for this season due to work commitments and travel.

Cork have now established a new backroom team which includes former All-Ireland winning captain Denise Cronin and will hope to bounce back from the All-Ireland defeat.  Cronin is happy with how the team is shaping up.  “”The side have been training very well for the past few weeks and we have over 40 girls out with us.  I am certainly optimistic about the season ahead but we couldn’t have asked for a tougher task in our first game than to face Wexford.  We know them very well from last year and if you get off to a bad start in the League it may have a serious effect on the rest of the season,”” Cronin said.

Wexford on the other hand will be wary of resting on their laurels after securing their first All-Ireland title in 32 years last year.  Wexford manager Stellah Sinnott will have a wealth of experience to call on as well as some in-form players.  The Leacy sisters, Una and Mary, along with Mags Darcy were members of the UCD side which retained the Ashbourne Cup last weekend, while Ursula Jacob was a member of the losing WIT side.

Wexford manager Stellah Sinnott will be looking to ensure Wexford come out fighting this year.  “”Following last years success it is great to be back into the normality of training although our training has been a bit disjointed with the Ashbourne Cup.  Although that does have benefits as several of the girls with be match fit going into the Cork game.  They are an extremely good side but we know that if we lose that game our league campaign is effectively over so if we are to prove this season that we are a great team then we will have to perform on Sunday,”” Sinnott said ahead of the game

In the other games this weekend Kilkenny face Dublin on Saturday, while Galway take on Tipperary on Sunday.  Dublin will be hopeful of a good showing this year following a poor league campaign last year, while Kilkenny will also be looking to get off to a positive start in front of their home crowd Saturday.

In the final game Tipperary travel to take on Galway.  Tipperary will be looking to bounce back following a disappointing year last year by their high standards.  While Galway under the stewardship of Liam O’Donoghue will be looking for an improved league performance, they will find it tough against an experienced Tipperary team.
