In round 2 of the Purcell Cup Preliminary games, there were wins for Mary I, Queens, Tralee IT, DIT and NUI Maynooth.
The first quarterfinal saw Mary I get off to the better start to lead 1-4 to 0-1 after 20 minutes with the goal coming from Aine Breathnach. DCU took control after that and scored 1-1 without reply and would have led at half time only for a super point-blank save from Mary I goalkeeper Jacinta O’Grady. In the second half Eimear Delaney, Heather Cooney, Nicola Morrissey and Emer Watson took control and Mary I scored 5 points to DCU’s 1 before ending the contest with a goal from Liz Hayes. DCU fought hard to get back into the game with a goal and a point but Mary I held out. After defeating Trinity 5-4 to 1-5 NUI Maynooth went into their quarterfinal with confidence against Athlone IT. However on the day Athlone proved too strong and sealed victory on a scoreline of 5-8 to 2-1. The remaining two quarterfinals take place tomorrow and Tuesday with DIT taking on GMIT and QUB against IT Tralee.
Quarter final pairings were as follows:
Mary I VS DCU
QUB VS IT Tralee
DIT VS GMIT
AIT VS NUI Maynooth
The Purcell Cup 2008 will be hosted by GMIT this weekend February the 16th and 17th.
