Camogie in Kerry is relatively new with Cillard, Abbeyleix and Causeway camogie clubs founded in 2005. However the Kingdom prides itself on her sporting prowess and with Camogie it is no different!
Cillard Camogie Club captured the national Feile Division 4 title and contested the Limerick under 14A county final this year, while Cauesway comprehensive recently won the Munster D 7 a side secondary schools competition.
St Marys, a combination outfit that come together at U16, have also more than held there own in Limericks very competitive under 16 A division;
Small seeds of development are pushing through in less well established hurling strongholds of Listowel, Scartaglen, Killarney and Tralee so with all involved in Kerry camogie working together – the future of Camogie in the Kingdom could be very bright!
U 14 Camogie Feile na nGael Finals 2010.
Co. Clare hosted the 2010 Feile na nGael Camogie Finals in glorious sunshine. Kerry were represented by Cillard Camogie Club after winning the County Final in March. Coaches Pete Young, Tommy o Connor and Eamon Fitzgerald put in a huge effort training the girls two nights a week and challenge matches every weekend. As a result of this preparation, Cillard completely dominated their group ,winning all matches comfortably against Parteen their host club, Truagh/Clonlara and Birmingham. On Saturday evening at Broadford GAA gounds they faced Clare side Scarriff in the semi final and again won that match comfortably. So it was at Clarecastle on Sunday morning that the Kerry girls faced Killanena again from Clare in the Division 4 final. Again, Cillard won this on a scoreline of 4-5 to 0-0 and the Captain Orla Young accepted the trophy on behalf of the club from the Camogie Association president Joan o Flynn. This was a huge achievement by the team, given that for the previous three years Kerry competed as a county team, there may have been concerns that a Kerry club may not be up to the standard. They were wrong.. Cillard scored a total of 33-29 and only conceded 1 point from a free in the entire tournament which proves that Camogie in Kerry is just as strong here as the so called traditional hurling counties. Jessica Fitzell finished as top scorer with 6-6 to her credit closely followed by Cora Carroll on 5-4. The experience of playing in two previous Feile finals stood these girls in good stead with full back Aoife Fitzgerald mdfielder Orla Young, half forwards Jessica Fitzell and Alanna Maunsell , proving you cant beat a cool head and a little bit of cuteness. The younger players such a Clodagh Walsh, Eilish Harrington, Kirsten Curran all did their bit when asked to do so. And so as the curtain came down on Feile na nGael 2010, Cillard and Kerry Camogie are basking in this latest success, which can only help in the promotion of the game, and with new clubs coming on board the future looks very bright indeed for this great game.
U14 A Limerick Championship 2010. – August
With Cillard and Causeway competing in the A grade, it was seen as good match practise for the two clubs from Kerry. However, early on in the group stages, an upset was on the cards when Cillard quietly and efficiently overcame the challenge of Kilmallock, and Na Piarsigh to book a place in the semi final against Adare. This was supposed to be the end of the campaign for Cillard, but they again showed all their experience at this grade and found themselves in the final with the powerhouse of Camogie in Limerick Newcastlewest. The Limerick side proved too strong on the day and won out convincing winners, but Cillard can hold their heads high, flying the flag at the top flight and holding their own with Limerick. The Kerry Co.Board would like to thank Limerick Co.Board for continuing to support the development in Kerry by allowing us to play in their league and Championship at all grades.
U16 A Limerick Championship 2010 – July/August
St. Annes of Kerry (combined team) opened their campaign with wins against Galbally, Na Piarsigh, Croagh/Kilfinny, and faced Kileedy in the semi final. A game where Kileedy took control of early on,but Annes fought back bravely and with only 5 minutes to go, only the bare minimum separated the sides. St. Annes pressed on but luck was not on their side, as they hit the post, the crossbar and with the clock running down, Kileedy popped two points over the bar in quick succession. Again our thanks to Limerick for allowing us to participate at this level which can only be good for the Kerry girls. Also, thanks to Pete Young and Tommy o Connor for coaching the girls all year.
MUNSTER COLLEGES SEVENS D – SEPT 2010.
Causeway Comprehensive School took part in the 7’s competition held at Kilfinane Co.Limerick on Wednesday last. With a large influx of 1st years to pick from, coaches Kim Barrett and Sinead County went for a mix of experience in the ever reliable Sarah Murphy, AnnMarie Leen and Patrice Diggin, and Megan Weir, along with 1st year Andrea Hanly in goals. She was worth picking, as her confidence under the high ball certainly saved the day for Causeway. Having overcome Croom and Castletroy in the opening games, they played hosts Kilfinane in the semi final. This was a tough encounter with very little separating the sides at half time. In the second half however the girls pulled away and won the match to face Killaloe in the final. Causeway won this final convincingly, and Orla Young accepted the trophy on behalf of the team. A great boost to schools Camogie in Kerry, and congratulations to all involved with this team. Next up is the Munster Colleges Intermediate C cup with Causeway playing St. Declans Kilmacthomas in the + finals.
