4th Peter Downey Referee Academy Application process now open!

We are delighted to announce that the 4th Peter Downey Referee Academy application process is now open. Referees are a key component to ensure our games are played in a safe and enjoyable environment.

The key aims of the programme are:
1. to raise the raise the standards of refereeing within our Association
2. to provide an intensive course of training in the practical aspects of refereeing
3. to provide the Association both nationally and provincially with an expanded pool of fully trained, competent referees

Criteria for Peter Downey Referee Academy:

  • Participants must be 18 to 50 years old
  • Open to both female and male referees
  • Must be Garda Vetted/PSNI compliant
  • Must be Safeguard compliant
  • Must be refereeing minimum 3+ years of adult camogie within their own county
  • Participants must not have previously been a member of the National Referee or National support Panel

Commitment expected:

  • Attend all contact sessions in-person or online
  • Complete and pass online rules test and other activities as required
  • Become part of their Provincial Match Officials Panel
  • Become part of the National Match Officials Panel

Programme content:

  • The playing rules
  • Fitness – including training regimes, nutrition, physical assessment, lifestyle & wellness
  • Work rate & positioning
  • Communication
  • Teamwork
  • Managing people

Training & Dates

The Peter Downey Referee Academy training will take place in-person and online from September 2022-August 2023. Participants must attend ALL training dates to graduate from the programme. Training dates for 2022 are as follows:

  • Saturday, 24th September 2022 in Croke Park
  • Tuesday, 18th October 2022 online
  • Saturday, 12th November 2022 in Croke Park

Please note there will be two in-person training dates in 2023 inclusive of the following:

  1. In-person training date in January 2023 which will includes the National Match Officials League briefing and fitness test
  2. In-person training date in April/May 2023 which will include National Match Officials Championship briefing and fitness test
