County
It’s time to turn our attention to the nine players nominated for an Al-Stars Award in the half-back line.
Heather Cooney (Galway)
This is a fourth All-Stars nomination for the Galway ace who lined out in the All-Ireland decider in the corner-back position. After a string of dominant displays, she has rightfully earned another nomination to go with the award she won back in 2015. The St. Thomas’ Club player has plenty of experience in the maroon jersey and that experience was to the fore this year as she helped her county claim the biggest prize in September.
Hannah Looney (Cork)
The versatile Cork star receives her third All-Stars nomination, despite a heartbreaking end to the Rebels’ reign as All-Ireland champions in the Semi-Final stages. The Killeagh player won her first All-Stars award last year, along with the four All-Ireland Senior Championship titles and numerous other trophies already in her trophy cabinet.
Kellyann Doyle (Kilkenny)
It has been a remarkable 12 months for the Piltown star, having featured on the bench 12 months ago in the decider, she worked her way back into the manager’s plans and deservedly took her place at wing-back for the Cats in the Final this year. Having overcome a cruciate knee injury in recent years, she has bounced back to become one of the first names on the Kilkenny team sheet. She is aiming to win her first award after receiving her maiden All-Stars nomination.
Claire Phelan (Kilkenny)
The centre-back for the Cats has once again proven her worth in the Kilkenny rear-guard having stepped into the centre this season and flourished while playing there. The primary school teacher has earned her sixth All-Stars award nomination, such is the impact she has amongst her county teammates. The Lisdowney star is aiming to win her first award.
Karen Kennedy (Tipperary)
It is a second consecutive nomination for the Tipperary star who is one of seven nominees to be recognised from the Premier County this year. The Thurles Sarsfields defender has produced many solid performances in the blue and yellow jersey and was a prominent figure in helping her county reach the Semi-Final stages of the Championship. She is aiming to win her first award.
Emma Helebert (Galway)
Having cemented her spot in the centre of the half-back line Emma has been phenomenal for the Tribeswomen in guiding them to All-Ireland and League glory this season. She has dominated the defence for Galway with her physicality and her determination to get to every ball first. She is aiming to claim her maiden All-Stars award after receiving her first nomination this year.
Lorraine Bray (Waterford)
One of four Déise players nominated this year, Bray is no stranger to these occasions having received consecutive All-Stars nominations for her performances at wing-back. The Cappoquin ace claimed a Soaring Stars Award back in 2015 and she is looking to add a first All-Stars Award to the collection this year after producing many fine performances in the Waterford rear-guard.
Lorraine Ryan (Galway)
The Secondary School teacher completes the Galway nominees in the half-back line, having also produced many consistent and dominant performances against all attackers that she has faced throughout the season. The Kiltullagh/Killimordaly Club player has received her sixth All-Stars nomination having won three awards in her career to date. Her experience in defence for Galway was crucial in helping them win League and Championship honours this year.
Clodagh Quirke (Tipperary)
The Tipperary team captain led by example this year for the Premier County as she guided her team to the All-Ireland Championship Semi-Finals. Clodagh marshalled the defence for Tipp and deservingly has earned her first All-Stars nomination. Having played in both the full-back and half-back line for Tipperary throughout the season her versatility has been to the fore for her county and her leadership proved the backbone for reaching the Semi-Final stages.
