Spring Series Workshop in Cork
The first Spring Series workshop, “Caman and have Fun”, took place in Cork on Friday 20th April with tutor Sean Cremin. 25 coaches attended the workshop at Castle Road which was facilitated by county development officer Esther O Leary. This workshop is designed for coaches working with 6-8-year-olds girls or an older age starting Camogie for the first time. Well done to all those for attending and also to the players who attended also.

Hamburg Abú!
On April 7th, Frankfurt Sarsfields GAA hosted the 3rd Annual German hurling and camogie championships. Hamburg’s hurling and camogie teams emerged as German Champions 2018 winning both the Chris Hennessey (Hurling) & Sebastian Rießbeck (Camogie) memorial cups. Well done to you all.
There has been plenty more happening behind the scenes in Hamburg. Follow the link below to read (and watch!) their youth members in action as well as other club news. It certainly is Hamburg Abú.

Éire Óg Ottawa, Canada.
A student coach from Ireland has just completed 6 weeks coaching with the school's programme.  Hurling and camogie were introduced to both primary and secondary students in Ottawa.  There are four school’s camogie teams between two schools, South Carleton Secondary School and West Carleton High School.  This year South Carleton Secondary School were awarded funding to purchase a full set of equipment for the school, which we presented to them. This is the first school in Canada to be awarded funding for hurling/camogie.
Éire Óg have also just recently established its first ever senior camogie team. Their first game was against the Montreal Shamrocks in Montreal on Saturday 14th April. This is a huge achievement for the club and Eastern Canada. This was also the first camogie game between two Eastern Canadian clubs.  The team only has one Irish born player which really shows the interest in the game with most of the players playing their first ever game of camogie in Montreal.
Exciting times ahead in Ottawa.

The final Foundation course of this part of the season saw the sun beaming down for the day (a rarity this Spring!! ) and finally allowed the coaches into the sunshine of Killeigh (St.Sinchills) on Saturday 21st April as 17 new coaches qualified from 4 clubs in Offaly. This rounds up what has been a very busy coaching course season in Leinster with over 400 new qualified Foundation coaches and over 50 new Level 1 coaches having gone through the system since January. Many thanks to all the organisers, venues, tutors and participants for their cooperation and enthusiasm in each of these courses across the province. We look forward now to all of these developing over the Summer months and onto Level 1 and Level 2 in the coming Autumn. We now focus our attention on the Spring Series Workshops – delivering practical workshops to the coaches for age specific groups. Ask your County Development Officer of what Spring Series workshop they have planned for your county or for more information contact sabrina.larkin@camogie.ie

Carlow/ South Kildare Novice Secondary Schools’ Cross-County Camogie Finals

Following a round robin league involving 7 secondary schools from Carlow and South Kildare who do not participate currently in the formal provincial secondary schools’ competitions, finals day arrived in at Athy Community College on Tuesday 24th April. This has been a brilliant initiative organised by Jennifer Murphy, a teacher at Athy CC and fully supported by the school’s principal, Richard Daly.

The shield final consisted of a cross-county clash with Presentation/Gaelcholaiste Carlow playing newcomers St.Farnan’s, Prosperous, Co.Kildare. This was an intriguing contest with the Carlow outfit taking a commanding league in the first-half with the Prosperous school mounting a comeback in the second-half, that, alas, fell short as the Carlow team responded, and they stepping up the ladder as they were the losing finalists in 2017.

The cup final pitted the 2017 cup winners, Athy College/ Ardscoil against the 2017 shield winners, Piper’s Hill, Naas. This match followed a similar pattern as the shield final with the hosts taking a commanding lead in the first half and the challengers responding in the second with three quick goals. However, Piper’s Hill coughed up too many soft frees in the second-half which Athy easily punished to stretch the lead again and run out as comfortable winners.

Thank you to the many teachers involved from the respective schools who made the league and this occasion possible and especially to organiser Jennifer Murphy and the superb hosts, Athy Community College.
