Athenry are Galway senior champions for the first time since 2009, as they overcame reigning All-Ireland champions Sarsfields on Sunday afternoon.

Two goals from Eimear Keane either side of half-time helped Athenry to a 2-8 to 1-8 triumph, as they denied Sarsfields a seventh consecutive county title.

Athenry will now go on to represent Galway in the AIB All-Ireland Club Championship.

There were also two contests down for decision in the AIB Munster Senior Camogie Championship, as the provincial campaigns got underway.

Recently-crowned Clare champions Inagh Kilnamona hosted Newscastle West of Limerick, with a semi-final berth on the line.

Inagh Kilnamona enjoyed the better of the contest in the opening exchanges, taking a 0-7 to 1-3 lead into the break. But the Treaty’s representatives turned things around, to prevail 1-10 to 0-9.

Meanwhile, Thurles Sarsfields came away from Ballyheigue with victory, as they overcame Clanmaurice on a scoreline of 0-11 to 0-0.

De La Salle of Waterford and Cork’s St Finbarr’s are the other clubs that will be in the mix in the semi-finals in the southern province.
